Visit the Local Producers

We drive towards the picturesque village of Maxairoi. We meet Kostas & Litsa who will introduce us to the processes of herbs collection, herbs oil extraction and making of essential oils. Litsa learns us ways of using the herbs in our daily life and their healing benefits. After that, we drive to the mountain village of Ramni to visit the local cheese maker. We watch Yiannis on duty, making his "graviera", the most typical Cretan cheese from sheep's milk & taste different kind of cheeses: graviera, anthotyros, myzithra. This brings us to the necessary first raki of the day! (Available : 01/11 to 14/06) Then we drive to the small village of Hiliomoudou, to visit Vasilis, the last person in Western Crete, who makes sheep and goat bells. We watch Vassilis working and enjoy a second raki! We continue to our last stop, an amazing view tavern with authentic Cretan dishes cooked by Eleftheria, with vegetables from her garden.

This class was the highlight of our trip to Crete and something we'll remember for a long time. The atmosphere was fantastic, as were the recipes and the dinner at the end (with plenty of raki!) We couldn't have asked for a better instructor - she was an absolute wealth of knowledge not just on the local cuisine but also Cretan history and culture as well.

Cretan Traditional Cooking Lessons

Reviewed By matalaman - Scotland, United Kingdom

I've been to Crete at least a dozen times. The people are wonderful, the culture fascinating, the landscape awe-inspiring and the food, the food - fabulous. I've been to many parts of the island - Maria, Stalis, Bali and Georgiopolis in the north, Matala and Agia Galini in the south and Kalo Nero in the south east where friends lived for a few years. I've visited caves and churches, gorges and beaches and several ancient sites. This year, I went further west. From Kissamos, we took a Cretan Cookery course. Picked up by mini-bus from our rented villa we spent five hours with a multi-national like-minded group of 11 people learning how to prepare a dozen or so Cretan dishes. Taught by a wonderful mother and daughter team (one a great cook, one with great English) we then had a tour of the farm / love groves / herb garden / wine store before enjoying the fruits of our labours. Later, the recipes were emailed to us. This was truly a highlight of all my times on Crete.

Ema and Aris were great hosts and teachers for the one afternoon class(approx. 5 hours) I and my girlfriend took at their studio. It was inspiring to be learning from people who truly love what they do. The atmosphere is very relaxed and creative. We contacted them some weeks before taking our trip and they were very flexible (and patient) in preparing a class designed for our level of experience. In addition, Ema was great in firing and organizing the shipping of the pieces to our home after the class. Besides the class, they have incredibly well-crafted and beautifully designed pieces at their shop! Don´t miss it!

Eco Events

We specialize in creating unique experiences, such as organizing excursions to remote traditional villages, so to give to our visitors the opportunity to interact with the locals and learn about their culture and habits. We invite you to witness the activities of the genuine Cretan life, such as harvesting soil and producing traditional products like wine, raki, cheese, traditional rusks, honey, olive oil... the list goes on! We always try to give our guests a warm experience, therefore most of our excursions are in small groups; that is because we value the personal feeling that mass tourism fails to deliver. Apart from daily trips to villages and natural landscapes, we give our guests the opportunity to organize a trip that will suit them 100%. By getting in contact, we can discuss and design the perfect one-day or multi-day trip for you. Therefore, we can personalize every experience depending on the taste, the wishes and the needs of each of our visitors.

In the Heart of the Mountains

We start from the local Olive Oil factory. The taste of pure local oil is followed by the explanation of the secrets of Cretan virgin olive oil. Question will be answered such as: what virgin olive oil means? Why olive oil? Why the Cretan olive oil is better than the Spanish and Italian one? After, we visit Stavros the bee-keeper close to the mountain village of Embrosneros. We will wear the bee-keeper's costumes, open the hives and see the bees, including the Queen, and discover all the secrets of bee-keeping. At the end we will taste honey with cheese and drink the first raki of the day! After that we drive really high up, to the pastures of Yiorgis the shepherd. Under the oak trees Yiorgis milks his sheep with the valuable assistance of his dog! And then prepares "tyrozoulia", the freshest cottage cheese you will ever taste! Meanwhile lamb will be boiling in the vat and will become, along with traditional "pilafi" rice, our meal... in the heart of the mountains!
