The grotto was great. During summer time I found it very nice and special. The amount of food was enormous- after the primmi piatti for 4 people that included cheese - 2 types of ricotta, 2 of other local cheese, and a humongous amount of meat- porchetta being one of the best I tasted, we could not eat anything else. Much than 100 euro I think, with dessert, coffee and plenty of wine included. Apparently it is s=hocking to take home food but I could not leave there all the delicious salami. Parking is a nightmare, like in all urban Italy, so park 1/2 mile away and walk. There are only 15 spots in the cul- de- sac in front of restaurant.

Ristorante Bucci

We enjoyed two dinners at Bucci during our stay in Castel Gandolfo. The view from the terrace makes a meal here a very nice experience, but in addition we found the service to be exceptional. The food style is local with nightly specials offered. Our waiter, Lucca, recommended local red wines each night, and we found both to be excellent. The menu had a nice range of choices for appetizers and the first and second plates. We particularly enjoyed the pasta Alla Amatriciana and the gnocchi with asparagus, and we very much liked our second plates including fish, lamb and beef, and found all to be very good. The desserts were excellent as well. The service was attentive but very leisurely paced, which we found a nice touch given that we were enjoying the lake view so much. On the first night I had asked for a single malt scotch after dinner, but it turned out that they had run out of the one I wanted. When we walked back in the next night, they showed us that they had bough a bottle of it to have it available for me. We were quite impressed by that extra effort in service.Every staff member with whom we interacted was friendly and service oriented. We highly recommend this restaurant.

Very good food at reasonable price. Service is excellent. We had antipasto, starter as pasta which was cooked to perfection. Chicken taliata as second was good also. Portions are the right size. Desert is limited but mille fogli is the best we ever tried.

If you are looking for a lovely lunch or apperitivo (appetizer), look no further than Enoteca del Lago in the Castelli Romani. The owners and their children run this homey restaurant and make pasta to order. We visited time and time again for silky carbonara. You can order porchetta pannini, freshly cooked vegetables, cheese and meat plates and luscious family-made wine. Add to that the lovely view of Lago Albano from the patio...you have a perfect meal! The owner was amazing when catering to my eight year old son; she wanted only the best for him!

Hostaria Santa Maria

Really really poor food. I cannot stress that enough. Very greasy, overly cooked in oil and expensive. I really don't agree with any of the good reviews here. Firstly, they have No menus. Just a board with no clear pricing on it. Second, when we arrived the place was quite, yet we were sat virtually in the road instead of under the shaded umbrella section but were told that area was booked, despite us finishing before anyone seated there. Thirdly, we were offered bread and water which we really didn't want, but were charged for! Come'on guys, charging for bread and water in this day and age!Fourthly, no sides. we ordered potatoes got around 3 small ones chopped up and they were swimming in grease. Fithly, all three of us ordered steak. They were the fattest greasiest steaks I'd ever seen. They too were swimming in grease. Who on earth fry's stake these days? And it was butter too. Talk about increasing calorie intake and destroying natural flavours. The bill: 3 steaks, we had no starters and no deserts. One beer and two soft drinks and the bill was over 70 euros. Don't know if the owner thought "here's some gullible British tourists to rip off (it happened a few times to us in Frascati), but my advice is stay out of this place. Much better restaurants for less in this town. And it doesn't even have a view over Rome, like the restaurants around the corner have. Poor. very poor.

If while visiting Rome you have the time and a vehicle try this little place in the Castelli. You'll love the Roman approach of the owner, but above all his wife's great recipes straight from the kitchen. Try the menu with the glasses of wine combination. Worth it.

On entering the owner? gave us a tour of the vast old wine cellars and also gave us 2 glasses of prosceco. The decor is tradition and looks old with piles of lemons, pomegranets & flowers. We sat by a log fire the menu is vast and cover most Rome cooking.......I had ossobocco wit whole onions and girlfriend had cheek of veal [absolutly perfect] The only minus oint was the wine list, it was a thick as a bible........I am always suspicious of such large wine lists as they run out of stock........true to for it happened, I asked the waiter to choose the best Frascati Superior ........ he cam back and said they did not have it!

We visited on a cold, windy day, and nearly blew past the door. The restaurant is small and cozy, with attentive staff and good food. The antipasto was fabulous - meat sliced paper thin while we waited. And the cheeses - mamma mia delicious. Our main dishes were tasty and we loved the atmosphere, too.

We had a set menu mainly of seafood and pasta. It was pretty good and they had a music performance indoors which added up to the atmosphere. I would rather prefer the outdoor seating at night if the weather is good. Although not visible at night, a walk by the lake on the opposite side would be awesome afterwards

We arrived about 7:00pm, a little too early, which gave half an hour to explore the surrounding cobbles streets and add to an already brimming appetite. The welcome was warm and hearty and a waitress helped to with our order from the menu. Two of our diners are vegetarian and they both were very impressed with the fare on offer. I opted for the cockles, not sure what the Italian word for it is but they were succulent. I also had an unexpected course of 'escalope of pork' which one of our guests ordered and misinterpreted as 'Scallops' needless to say there were no complaints here as I polished it off and it was delicious. The prices were very reasonable and the food and wine for those that indulged were both excellent. Highly recommended...
