The so called marble cathedral and marble caves was the most memorable area we saw in Chile. We were in Chile the whole 2019 and visited every one of their regions. We went to the Atacama desert and the town of San Pedro de Atacama. We went to the Torres del Paine area. But the General Carrera Lake was the highlight of the year. We went to Puerto Rio Tranquilo and took a "full day" boat ride that took us to the marble cabinets area and then to the marble chapel, marble caves and to the marble cathedral. Here are a few photos.

Ana means cave, Te is “the” and Pahu is a Polynesian musical instrument, a kind of a drum, used in Tahiti amongst other places, so probably the Rapanui name means cave for playing the drum. The volcanic eruptions that gave rise to Easter Island thousands of years ago, created lava channels that cover much of the subsoil. Located on the foothill of the Maunga Terevaka, it is the largest cavern on the island and the best example of these large volcanic tubes. It is an off beat attraction that is best explored by walking. One needs to be in decent physical condition for the same as one may counter rough surfaces and frequent bending is needed to navigate through some of the narrow passages. One gets to see caves with open areas that were used by the former Rapa Nui people of centuries past to cultivate bananas, taro, and other produce. Certainly would very highly recommend this tourist attraction preferably with a local guide and with a head light to counteract some of the darkness in some of the passages.

Ana Te Pora is a medium-sized cave, located in the vicinity of a cliff on the northwest coast of Easter Island . It forms part of the great system of caves of the sector known like Roiho, whose greater exponent is the cave of Ana Te Pahu. Exploring through this entire cave needs a good degree of physical fitness. Would certainly very highly recommend exploring this long cave with a local tour guide and by having flashlights on the head as certain parts of the cave are extremely dark.

Ana Kakenga is an awe inspiring cave just north of Hang Roa. Climb down into the entrance to see the end of the cave, a hole that opens onto a sheer cliff face - very high up. Walk aorund the headland after to see a view of the cliff face with the hole perched high on the cliff.

A must when in Arica. It's only 12 kms south of Arica center there is no public transportation that passes nearby and I would not try walking (for safety reasons) however one can take car (they is parking ) a taxi, tour, and / or bike to the caves which date back to somewhere between 6000 - 2000 BC when the caves were used by first settlers of America. Its a short 750 metro walkways which takes you through the caves along the coastline. Since it was built in 2016, it has an easy to use path for those who may need Upon entrance, all are issued mandator helmet. Based on my experience, it not so much for falling rocks, but for the bids who live hight up on the cliffs. . . (my daughter would out the hard way) . Very scenic, from the point of view of the seascape The path is clearly marked with interesting facts noted along the way (ONLY in Spanish) Not good for international tourists. Take sunblock and wear, walking / tennis shoes, Depending on the time of your trip, you may want to take a a windbreaker. It opens at 7 A.M. and closes at 6 P.M.To really take in the experience, give, yourself at least 2 hours. We found the best time to arrive (in February) between 15 - 16 hrs. Very little traffic, tourists and the light was perfect! It's free to the public.

Located at a short driving distance from Puerto Natales, it is a natural monument with caves. It is situated along the flanks of Cerro Benitez. It comprises several caves and a rock formation called Silla del Diablo (Devil's Chair). The monument includes a cave which is notable for the discovery in 1895 of skin, bones and other parts of a giant ground sloth called Mylodon darwini, making it extremely unique. It is also part of the End of the World Route, a scenic touristic route. Certainly would very highly recommend visiting Cueva Del Milodon to any tourist in Puerto Natales or Punta Arenas.
