Minack Theatre

This open-air theatre is dramatically situated on the cliffs at Porthcumo, near Land's End, and hosts a season of plays and musicals from March to November.

Reviewed By SophisticatedLady17 - London, United Kingdom

Following a great scenic drive from St Ives past Zennor, St Just and Sennen Cove we arrived at the theatre. Luckily it was a stunning sunny day. The Covid precautions were well managed and the staff all had a friendly welcoming and positive attitude. The play was brilliant and the actors all very talented. The acoustics were amazing even when doing battle with a passing helicopter! The setting is magical - just make sure you have warm clothes and/or a rug as when the sun goes down, it does get a bit chilly.

Absolutely fantastic experience, Matt and his team were great and the route we took was superb. They made sure everyone was included regardless of ability and supported people who found coasteering a challenge enabling them to overcome their fears. My 15 year old who hates everything said it was the best thing he has done in years and by far and away the best thing about our holiday.

Newlyn Filmhouse

Opened in March 2016, Newlyn Filmhouse is becoming a popular place to visit. Positioned opposite the Coombe River, the building cuts into a steep granite bank, cleverly housing a two screen Cinema and spacious Cafe Bar. We recommend booking in advance for films, events and restaurant meals. The digital screens feature armchair and sofa style lumbar seating with a tiered layout. The top of the range projection equipment provides razor-sharp Barco DP2K8S digital viewing with audio via punchy 5.1 Dolby Sound Systems. As well as the best in mainstream and alternative cinema, offerings include live events, children's films and local titles. The fully licensed Cafe Bar upstairs is a great place to meet before or after a film, or pop into for a Monmouth coffee and a slice of cake. The seasonal menu provides freshly cooked delicious food, often chosen from the staff's favourite cookbooks. All fresh produce comes from within a half hour radius including fish from Newlyn Fish Company.

We did the cold war room which was great fun and good for a large group. Clues came up on screen when requested which was better than someone having to come in. There were about 10 things you had to do to escape- much better than the ones which only have a few. This escape room involved more ‘exploring’ than some- lots of looking around and examining objects. Overall a great escape room with some clever clues.

Merry Maidens

One of England's best-preserved and complete ancient stone circles consisting of 19 granite stones that form a perfect circle nearly 78 feet in diameter.

Reviewed By SClond - London, United Kingdom

We saw the merry maidens from the upper deck of a bus thanks to a tip off from a local after we had been excited by an earlier view of a single standing stone on the same A1 bus route. The bus waited there quite a long time and we realised it was because the bus driver had stopped to pop out and. take photos of the maidens. The local said he had been using the bus for 30 years but had never seen a driver stop to take pictures before.

Lanyon Quoit

Believed to be a burial chamber or a mausoleum from prehistoric times, this well-known Cornish quoit collapsed during a storm in 1815, breaking some stones, and was re-erected several years later.

Reviewed By Y468WYpaulr - Wellingborough, United Kingdom

Firstly, apologies for the title. I couldn't help myself. But I'm not joking about the impression this weathered stone structure makes. I suppose it's merely the product of a fertile and romantic imagination but it seems, to me, to radiate an atmosphere evoking times long past and customs obscured by the intervening ages. Quite a feat for a simple structure of four balancing stones, not much taller than me. The setting helps, of course, with the wind-swept landscape of the Land's End Peninsula, the overgrown stone-centred hedgerowss, the heathery moorland backdrop and the remains of an old tin mine on the horizon. We arrived as the sun set below a blanket of mackerel sky which made for some striking photographs. Like many of the ancient sites around, the quoit takes some finding. The postal code takes you to a nearby farm, there are no signs, maps are misleading and there is only a tiny layby to park in, next to a stone stile in the hedgerow - easy to miss. To make things worse, the quoit, being not much higher than the hedgerows, is not visible from the road from most angles. We drove past it twice before suddely catching a glimpse. It's well worth persevering for, though. Other local sites are larger and more complex but none have as commanding a presence. Obviously, this is free to visit at any time.
