Capel Manor Gardens

Reviewed By AlinaRC

From the moment we arrived we were delighted with our visit to Capel Manor. We last visited in August 2019 and were anxious what we would find. The gardens were exceptionally well tended and maintained with hardly a weed in sight. All of the plots looked very well cared for, which made for a relaxing and enjoyable time. Capel Manor is different from large national trust or other country house gardens. Much of it is made up of over 30 small and medium sized individual gardens, similar in size to regular front and back gardens. These are along a 'street' - Sunflower St and a good place to start your visit. Right at the start is a Japanese garden, then in different styles including in Victorian, cottage, contemporary, mediterranean and so on. There are also a number of gardens that have won awards at Chelsea flower show and been moved there. These include an Australian style garden, growing in faith garden and one using recycled materials. April is a lovely time to visit with all of the tulips coming out, apple and cherry blossom, late daffodils and many other spring bulbs. Most of the gardens were colourful and interesting and some displays of tulips were exceptional. There is also a large walled garden close to the house which was looking wonderful. There is plenty of space with large lawns, a lake, a temple, and a modern 'ruin' on the site of the original house. This has the most striking white garden and has been set up for outdoor weddings. There is plenty to engage adults and children, keen gardeners and armchair gardeners. If you want to learn more about gardening then the Which trial area show some new varieties of plants that are being tested to see how well they grow. Will be back again later in the year for a return visit.

Found an offer via social media to visit Santa at Middleton House. Only had to purchase a ticket for my Grandson and no other fees. We were greeted by friendly staff and shown the order of our visit including a letter to Santa, colouring in of decoration of his choice. We sat down and enjoyed a light, fresh lunch including a children’s pack and hot drinks. At our allocated time Santa’s elf came and collected us to visit Santa in his grotto. They had the theme quite right, beautifully decorated. Our Grandson happily discussed his Santa’s letter and chose his present which was very generous. No hustle or bustle, really well organised and relaxing calm experience unlike over crowded Santa visits we have experienced in the past. Beautiful gardens with lots of history, lovely staff and perfect tea room. We will be back.

Trent Park is a lovely place to visit and is surrounded by beautiful countryside. You can choose to walk one of the special routes laid out in the park or just wander at will. There is a small wildlife sanctuary along with a children's playground. It is a lovely place in which to picnic or alternatively you can have some lunch in the cafe.

Whitewebbs Museum of Transport

I’ve taken my son - nearly three - here a handful of times, on the weekly Tuesday open day especially, and it’s always been magical. The people running it are very friendly and welcoming and eager to explain and show you round, without ever being too much. They’re generous too - my son has had toy cars and even a model railway shed given to him impromptu - and caring and obviously also highly knowledgeable. The train carriages in the garden with model railways inside are a total dream and the men running them really lovely. It’s idyllic on a warm day to be there, with the garden and the life size toy horse and real ones grazing nearby. There’s also a terrific old phone box and innumerable vintage buses and vehicles. The top two floors of the museum itself are fantastic for children - one has old bicycles and toy cars and a rack of bells and horns to try out, and the top floor some terrific wooden toys (I think there’s some new ones recently added, like a garage and a shop) as well as wartime memorabilia, incredible paddle steamer model and tons of model buses etc. The cafe is big and warm and cheap and delightful. And the baby changing loo is as good as you get, too. It’s really a wonderful place - the building is grand too. It’s easily accessible by actual train too - a 12 min walk from crews hill station (nb, not step free).

Broomfield Park

Great sense of community with a cafe run by volunteers, an annual orchard fest, an occasional outdoor movie for the neighbourhood to come together and enjoy and a yearly funfair. The many lakes are also beautiful and rife with nature. The abandoned house adds character to the park with the intriguing backstory and glass panels to look in and marvel at what once was and will never be again. The recently established wetlands are pretty but a bit misplaced and impractical. Other than that, the park is lovely (don’t miss out on the greenhouse selling plants - they always produce fine crop!).

Parkside Farm

Wow wow wow!! This place is just amazing. I booked in advance due to social distancing rules and got a 2 hour slot. We got the 12pm slot and there were lots of strawberries and raspberries. We all had an amazing time. We also got some spinach, green beans and courgettes. Very reasonably priced too. It's £4 a person but you get your money deducted from what you pick. We paid a total of just over £20 in the end but it was worth every penny. The experience in itself was so good and then to pick fresh produce to be able to come home and cook for dinner is just so good. Family friendly. Plenty of space for kids. Only thing is toilets are currently closed due to coronavirus rules.

Forty Hall & Estate

Reviewed By AmbridgeGirl - London, United Kingdom

Have visited Forty Hall many, many times before and during lockdown. It offers so much - a walled garden, spaces to sit/picnic, a lake, fishing, a working farm, a farm shop and vineyard. Once a month there is a farmer's market. The house is worth a visit. Great starting point for some amazing walks. Absolutely love the place. Highly recommend.

Collection is straightforward and covid friendly? Having arrived at the appointed time, I was a little disappointed to be told to go wait in my car because my thought process was "oh? its not ready?" Not a bit of it though? That's intentional, you arrive, they dish it up, you go off with freshly served piping hot food. Much better idea! The food itself was fantastic if you like a traditional Sunday Roast. We all had a different main and none of us were disappointed. I'm not just promising to return, I've already booked!
