Top 10 British food in Islay, Scotland, United Kingdom

May 16, 2020 Janette Largent

Reviews on British food in Islay, Scotland, United Kingdom. The Isle of Islay spans 240 square miles, with an impressive 130 miles of coastline. The island is famous for its malt whiskies, and there are eight distilleries on the island. To be sure, many people visit the Isle to tour distilleries and "appreciate" whisky, but the wildlife and scenery are also a big draw. Bird-watching is particularly popular through the year. Just don't try to squeeze it in after a distillery tour or two. Looking through binoculars has been known to make some people woozy, especially after whisky.

This is perfect for those visiting the distillery, although it’s pretty remote for a random lunch stop while touring the island. Service was fast and friendly. I had a toasty with red onion marmalade, a half cup of Cullen Skink, a yummmmy apple crisp with ice cream, and a latte. I’m not a scotch drinker but this gave me a place to eat and relax while the others in my group did a tasting.

Three of us had dinner and drinks on our first evening in Port Ellen. We were extremely tired from a very long travel day but got a second wind when we saw the whisky selection. Appetizers, meals, and desserts were all delicious, the service was excellent, and we were even entertained with live music at the end of the night. Our experience was so good, we returned for another evening meal and a breakfast, which was made exceptional by very good espresso.

We visited Portnahaven as a family member has a house there and what a beautiful little place it is.The pub come restaurant is a great little place, very friendly and the food is great. My only gripe is the prices, and I get that it is a small place but we got 2 cheese burgers and chips a glass of wine and a pint of lager tops and it came to £31.50Prices aside I would recommend it and will be back.

Just finished a whisky tour, walked in and was sat down over looking the water.Didn't take long to pick the meal, fish for both, a lovely big piece of salmon and a large piece of haddock with trimmings. Service was very polite and prompt, food was lovely, could have sat there for the afternoon but more tours awaited.

Although our food was OK we were disappointed with the slow and disinterested service of the young lady in charge of the dining room. During a six night stay on Islay we ate here twice. Both times I had seafood. On the first night the sea bass (Dorado) and the second time a platter with scallops, langoustines and lobster. Everything was excellently prepared and tasted delicious. Prices were resonable and service was professional, although some members of staff can be less grumpy when addressing their customers. This can not be said for the asian waiters who were very friendly and service minded. We had a great night here both times.

We ate here our first night on Islay at the recommendation of our B&B hosts and were not disappointed. The hotel itself is charming and the restaurant cozy and intimate. Service was friendly, but impeccable and efficient. The menu was full of locally sourced foods and had at least one or two vegetarian options. Great selection of local gins and whiskies, and good wine list. All in all, a great meal!Thank you for your lovely review, we are so pleased to have made your fist night on Islay enjoyable and do hope we can welcome you again on another evening.
