The Red Lion & Cellar Room

A wonderful example of a 17th-century pub with a wonderful modern (ish) twist. Set in the Surrey Hills, The Red Lion is warm and trational pub, like a cosy pub should be. But we also have a beautiful world war 2 bunker which is a unique party venue room.

This is a fabulous country pub, the staff are very attentive without being in your face, the food was excellent, we had starters, mains and pudding and all were perfect, the pie was stunning, steak and burgers also very good.We visited on a Friday night and although the main bar and Cellar Room were both busy service was very good and all staff were happy and enthusiastic to serve you.would strongly recommend a visit.Dear 112coling, Thank you for such a lovely review. It takes many things to get a pub working/ feeling good and sometimes all those efforts are recognised. Your review has given us one of those times. Appreciated. We are all very proud of this iconic pub, cellar room & B&B venue and your set of words has made us feel more so. Again thank you and hope to see you back soon. Cheers, Marc

The Half Moon

A proper country village pub, serving real ales, lagers, ciders, a good choice of wines and just as important, good pub grub!

Enjoyed a fantastic dinner at The Half Moon. We had rib-eye steak and liver and bacon. Both dishes were absolutely perfect. The liver was so tender, like eating moose. (Not the animal!) Both had real home made chips and great vegetables. Dessert was apple and toffee crumble, amazing. Thanks chef, you are a champion. Servers were lovely as well.

Stumbled on the Queens Head more or less by accident and it was a great surprise. Harming cosy pub with cheerful staff and a fantastic menu. The seafood salad was laden with fresh fish and seafood, deserts were interesting and fresh and even the coffee was good. Heartily recommended.

The food this time was actually very good but it was cold where we were placed in the conservatory area and the service (especially considering there was only us plus one more table dining) was non existent. We had to repeatedly chase for service.Sad, but it’s had its second chance and not delivered.Hello SHDC-Dancer. Thank you for taking the time to review Red. I’m very glad to hear that on your first visit since we re-opened in May under new management you found the food very good. I think you came just as the weather turned and the Garden Room heating has now been turned up. I was disappointed that you didn’t receive our normal high level of service ( as you will see from other reviews this is unusual) and would be interested to know when you came But all our staff are aware of your comments which will help us know where we can make improvements. So I do hope that you will give us a second chance sometime.

I visited Sage last night for the first time and was delighted to find such an excellent restaurant, with a varied menu and where you don't feel that you are being ripped off. The service was very good, the food was of a very high quality and the place was spotless. We just felt so welcome and would love to encourage people to support this establishment, even though I am not a vegan/vegetarian.

The Lamb Inn Rusper

Reviewed By lorraine p

I visited the Lamb Inn with a group of girlfriends for Sunday lunch following a suggestion from one of my friends who had previously been a while ago. Nice setting in the pretty village of Rusper tucked away at the end of a country lane. We were originally booked to sit inside but the weather was warm and sunny and there was plenty of space in the outside seating area so were able to move and eat out there. Good selection of food on the menu. Five of us opted for the roast beef! and one veggie for the cheese ploughmans. The waiting staff were attentive and bought out the food, followed by additional drink requests and condiments. The portions were a good size, beef, potatoes and yorkshire with loads of help your self peas, carrots and cauliflower cheese. The only downside was that the meat was slightly chewy and the roast potatoes pretty tough to cut, we ate just after two so maybe if we had eaten earlier both the meat and potatoes might not have been as dry. I wouldnt say this put us off though as all roast plates were polished fully off! Veggie friend who had the ploughmans could not finish hers as had a huge lump of cheese with two large crusty baguettes to go with her salad and pickles. The dessert menu looked lovely but we were all too full to have dessert after we had eaten. A lovely spot and food

We booked lunch at relatively short notice and arrived to be shown to a table downstairs on the right with another couple mid-meal and a couple with their small child (max 18mths old)..... in such a small space, the ability of a small child to make mess, noise and generally distract from an expensive fine dining experience is uncanny. I don’t want to be a killjoy but atmosphere is a critical part of a 9 course menus and sitting in shock at someone bringing a noisy mess machine to disturb the tranquility of other diners suggests a passion for profits rather than a pursuit of excellence. Shame really. Now the food..... The food was technically advanced in terms of our crisps/mousse/foams/purée etc but rather unexciting. The soy caramel quail probably the highlight despite being less technical. The low point was the hugely overcooked slice of scallop - unforgivable in a fine restaurant to turn delicate white flesh to leather. Green green green which was a broccoli many ways dish was interesting rather than divine. The side track was a very flaky crumbly brioche which leaves your fingers greasy for the rest of the meal. Final gripe is a matter of taste but we found the wine list categories by flavour patronising and unhelpful, although the premier cru mersault was worth its £300+ price tag. Overall, spooky atmosphere and ok kitchen means won’t return. A 3 plus simply due to the fact that 90 minutes after they left, the bomb site of a table housing the child still has debris and detritus piled on the floor - again attention to detail, not at a standard we associate with such experiences. There’s better and I’d say go find it.

I have reviewed a reasonable number of restaurants and this is only the second 1 star score attributed. Reserved a table by phone, arrived a few minutes before the agreed time. I was shown to a table by the barman and then ....nothing. No menu, no offer of a drink. 12 minutes passed, waiting staff drifted through the restaurant, looking after a table of about 10 and another couple. There were no other diners present so it wasn’t busy. Then a new diner arrives and is immediately given a menu. This was more than the bridge could bear. Waitress was approached who offered a half hearted apology accompanied by asking me if I had seated myself! On being told that I had not and I was leaving, the defaulting barman was identified, although I’m not sure it was necessarily his fault. Result- one lost cover which I’m sure won’t break their bank but is so irritating. On the plus side, a 1km walk took me back into the town and an excellent Thai restaurant (review to follow). And I was offered a menu and a drink on arrival. Dear TriskelionI very rarely respond to reviews but in this case I feel I really ought too as I have to completely disagree with your comments.I think it is fair to outline what happened with a bit more accuracy. You sat in the barn area which was busy and put your head down buried in your phone and no point did you make any attempt to make eye contact or speak to any of the waitresses. Unsurprisingly they thought you must be waiting for someone to join them. Instead of just making some attempt at communication you continued to stare at your phone until after 5 mins (as checked on CCTV) you decided to have an unbelievably rude rant at one of my staff and stormed out threatening to leave a poor review. My staff may have not realised that you were alone and ready but your reaction both at the time and since are quite frankly totally over the top. As soon as they realised they offered you a drink and menu but you clearly had no intention of accepting their apology.
