You can’t just chance across this place as it’s well out the way at the end of a closed off road on the very edge of the moors. Though we planned to eat and didn’t call ahead to book we were squeezed in by very helpful staff as most tables were reserved. A simple short menu was available for quick trips in the evening and this worked a treat. I think our food was delivered fresh and piping hot within 5-10 minutes of ordering which is probably the fastest I’ve ever known in a pub. Plentiful and tasty simple omelette with chips and tarka lager worked a treat and though we didn’t eat desert the choices looked great. A small narrow car park that soon fills up so park wisely on arrival. Definitely one to return to.

We had a supurb meal here on Sunday night. Very impressed with quality of food and thought it was excellent value for money. Good honest delicious food - not posh (or trying to be) just great pub grub. Happily go back and try other stuff off the large menu.

Arrived at 2pm (had booked), but sadly they had run out of roasts. To be fair they were so apologetic, and the place itself was so lovely we were happy to go with the suggestion of steak with roast dinner trimmings and we were not disappointed. The steak was fantastic, the roast potatoes and veg were perfect. Gravy was amazing. Only negative would be not enough potatoes, and home made Yorkshire puddings would be better. But it was still a very very good dinner. The pub is stunning inside and out. Beautifully well kept gardens with brilliant scenic views. Service was also very good. Our first visit but won't be our last.

We’ll definitely be back. · We booked a one night stay the day before arrival and asked for a first floor room due to mobility problems. Very pleased to get an email from the hotel within 15mins saying all our requests would be met. On arrival Melissa the hotel receptionist was charming, professional and knowledgable and helped us with our luggage. Jake the night porter was friendly and helpful and again in the morning Kayleigh helped us with our bags and parking. It is obvious that the staff all work well together. We purchased breakfast at the restaurant and it was good. The best bit was the room, large twin bedded room but the beds zipped together to make a super king size bed, good quality bedding and I wanted to take the mattress home with me! Although we were above the main entrance and overlooking the busy junction we didn’t hear a thing, the curtains were very heavy blackout curtains and certainly did their job. Great walk in rainfall shower and modern decoration. Tea & coffee, biscuits, still and sparkling water provided. All at a fantastic rate. Really pleased and will certainly look up other Wetherspoon pub. The staff made our stay just that bit better than normal and were great ambassadors for the hotel. · No parking but there were about 4 disabled bays at the back and public parking nearby. Not hotel’s fault as it is the oldest inn in Okehampton.

Peter Tavy Inn

After checking in to our hotel in Tavistock we asked for dinner recommendations from our host. Given a few excellent options, we decided head to Peter Tavy Inn on hearing that it was a warm and cosy British Pub with generous servings of traditional pub food (despite it being a ten minute drive away through narrow laneways and dark corners). All part of the big adventure we have come to love in our 50 day journey in UK.We arrived to a welcoming, old style pub, with happy voices and tempting kitchen smells emerging. The low timber teams meant a bit of head ducking for my 6'2" husband as we were shown to our corner table in a fully booked restaurant. We had been told of the pub's reputation for the best steak and stilton pie so we could not resist ordering after entrees of chicken liver pate and smoked salmon using the freshest ingredients. The pie's hot method pastry was buttery and delicious and the meat tender and beautifully flavoursome. Each of us enjoyed an enormous piece of pie accompanied by a side dish of beautifully prepared vegetables and crispy potatoes. N!eedless to say we could not manage to even view the dessert menuAll in all a wonderful, warm and cosy evening in this delightful pub provided another happy memory for our book of travels.

We stayed on the Fox and Hounds campsite for 5 nights and had a great time.Everything is very friendly and laid back which we really liked. We were told to just turn up as there's plenty of space but as it was the bank holiday, there were only a couple of hook ups left but we managed to find somewhere and just ran a long cable to the electricity box. It's a great place for going for walks on Dartmoor as there's a path from the site straight onto the moor. The toilet and shower facilities are quite basic but perfectly adequate. Everyone in the pub are super friendly and it's a great place to go for a drink and a natter. The food in the pub is lovely - I thoroughly recommend the braised beef cheeks!!We look forward to returning to the Fox and Hounds.

I've always enjoyed the Castle Inn. It's pleasantly old fashioned, with genuine old settles and an air of slightly rough and ready antiquity I personally enjoy. The food is decent and I particularly enjoyed their "Blue Pie", which includes steak and a local blue cheese. It's not slick, it's not trendy, but it doesn't try to be and I'd rather call in here for a meal or a drink and many a more pretentious establishment.

My wife, so and I had lunch in the Castle Inn prior to visiting Lydford Gorge near Tavistock during our annual trip to Devon and Cornwall. There was free parking opposite the Inn. The pub is very old, with lots of character and is located next to Lydord Castle. The barmaid was charming and very helpful. We both had a ploughman’s lunch which turned out to be HUGE! So great value for money. There was also a decent choice of beer.Definitely the place to pop into when visiting the gorge.
