Zorian Artworks

Zorian Artworks displays a collection of fine detailed landscape paintings of atmospheric subjects in bold vivid colours. Artist Zorian Matthews can be found here in his studio most days working on his latest piece and is available to talk to about any of his work as well as offering free advice on your own paintings and art projects.Located in the renowned Brighton Artists Quarter, Zorian Artworks is directly on the seafront promenade, contributing to the extensive art scene in the city. Opening out onto the beach next to Brighton pier it is a great to stop and just enjoy the art or purchase a piece that would look great in your home. The gallery is open to the public all year round, most days between 11.00am till 6.00pm.The gallery is in a converted Victorian fisherman's shop, built in the old brick arches lining the beach front and situated in the historic old town area of Brighton. These shops were formally used to mend nets and store boats etc and still retain their old character which compliments the art they currently house.

There are 2 floors full of original art by Nigel Greaves. The vibrancy of the paintings as you walk in is stunning. There are plenty of paintings in different styles and for different tastes. We received a warm welcome and particularly enjoyed the back story behind some of the paintings.

Farleys House & Gallery

Sussex home of Surrealist photographer Lee Miller and artist Roland Penrose. Lee Miller and Roland Penrose came to live at Farleys House in 1949 and for the thirty five years that followed they built up a collection of contemporary art treasures, many of which were created by their friends and visitors including Pablo Picasso, Man Ray, Max Ernst, Leonora Carrington and Joan Miro. The work of these and numerous others are exhibited in the house alongside those of Penrose and Miller giving the visitor a fascinating look into the world of the Surrealists. Farleys is open to the public on Sundays & Thursdays between April and October each year. All visits to the house are by guided tour.

I have been wanting to visit Farleys for some years and we finally had the opportunity to do so yesterday as we were in the area. We were not disappointed! From the wonderful welcome, the great recommendations on how to spend our time there to best advantage and the tour of such an extra-ordinary house, this was a day to remember. The tour was brilliant, and of huge interest to anyone who likes Surrealism and / or 20th century art and photography. There is so much to absorb in each room that you don't know where to look! Finally, I can't finish without mentioning the legendary gluten-free lemon drizzle cake which we ate in the gardens with a cup of tea. What a wonderful way to spend half a day!

Great little gallery where Emma the owner sits painting and chats to you as you wander round to look at the array of items on sale, from paintings to postcards, jewellery and quirky books. Other galleries in the town are stuffy and expensive - this one is super-friendly, moderately priced and showcases the work of local artists. Definitely worth a browse - and browsers are welcomed
