Archaia Poli tis Lato

Reviewed By 267rich - Bristol, United Kingdom

Other reviewers have commented on what the site is about, I just wanted to highlight a few things for other visitors. Sturdy footwear is essential, the paths are not flat! Loose stones, small and large can make walking tricky, so no wheelchair access You need good balance to clamber up the rocky places. The wind was up when we went, dust blowing about, but cooler! No guidebook, some boards around the site. How people ever made a home on this mountain I will never know, creating their homes around the massive rocks.

The Ancient City Lissos

Reviewed By ValentineH92 - London, United Kingdom

To reach the ancient city of Lissos we walked from Sougia on the well marked trail up the Lissos gorge and over the hill and down a rough zig-zag path to Lissos. This walk of one and a half hours should not be underestimated. The descent in to the Lisos plain is quite tough especially in the heat. At first sight Lissos looks like a pile of rocks but there is spectacular history here of a flourishing city from the 3rd century BC. Give yourself time to recover from the walk before paying attention to the ruins. The first building you come to is the temple with a Roman mosaic, further down near the harbour is the chapel. Whole area is atmospheric and hard to believe once an important city. After a cool swim we waited for our pre-ordered water taxi - Captain George (plenty of adverts for him in Sougia) - who arrived promptly to whisk us away.

The Palace of Knossos

These labyrinthine ruins are said to have been home to the monstrous Minotaur, a half-man half-bull creature that devoured young virgins.

Reviewed By lilianamateiu - Bucharest, Romania

The legend has it that king Minos of Crete wanted to hide the fruit of his wife Pasifae's cheating on him. This fruit was none other than the famous Minotaur. In order to conceal his presence from others, the king ordered the Athenian engineer Daedalus to build a labyrinth like construction. The palace of Cnossos with its terraces, columns and many rooms, courtyards and staircases looks like a labyrinth of incomparable beauty if you take into account its digital restoration to its former glory. The wonderful wall paintings and its many artefacts exhibited in the Archaeological museum of Heraklion bear witness to an amazing civilization flourishing here, in Crete at the dawn of human history. Visiting Cnossos is therefore a real treat and its astoundingly beautiful items to be found in the museum will only add to one's feelings of wonder and reverence.

Gournia

An ancient town dating back over 3,500 years, excavated and restored to show visitors how common people lived in ancient Greece.

Reviewed By RonandGayeH - Perth, Australia

What an incredible feeling it is to stand amongst, and wander around, remains of buildings constructed by the amazing Minoan culture 4000-5000 years ago. This is a site that all visitors to Crete must make the effort to visit. It is an incredible archaeological achievement, and is surprisingly inexpensive to visit.
