Upon arriving in Bogota and wondering what I had got myself into we quickly learned that this opportunity was a gift. The gift was having my eyes and consciousness opened to the wonder of the Colombian Culture and people. Our guide had suggested a few walking and funicular tours we could do with a day walking group tour or solo and we followed his advice closely. First we took the Funicular up to the cathedral atop Monserrate and were dumbfounded by the beauty and vista of Bogota from above. We joined a walking city tour and explored the old city and sampled exotic fruits and standard Colombian fare. Later we walked thru the Art Gallery to view some of Botero's art and then the Bibliotecha (Library) where a Mariposa (butterfly) photo display was on view. What a fantastic day of discovery before joining our nine day guided tour of Colombia.

The Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá is an underground Roman Catholic Church built within the tunnels of a salt mine 200 meters underground in a mountain near the town of Zipaquirá. It is a very popular destination in the country. The name 'Salt Cathedral' was given mainly to attract tourists. The functioning church receives as many as 3,000 visitors on Sundays. It has no bishop; therefore, it has no official status as a cathedral in Catholicism.

I have been to the Catederal de Sal a few times and I am always amazed at the work put in to make the entire thing. I felt like it was a little expensive for Colombia standards but it is really neat. If you are Colombian or have a cedula the price is a little cheaper than what tourists will pay. I went the first time over 10 years ago and there was not much in the way of entertainment or food options. I can say this has changed quite a bit. There are restaurants outside the mine and gift shops as well as a climbing wall. There is an old steam engine train that can take you from Bogota to Zipa and drop you at the mine but it is slow and takes a long time. I would recommend a cab or get a drive. We got the cheapest tickets since we did not want a guided tour and wanted to go at our own pace. They include little radios that will provide all the information about the mine and the history ect that are included in the admission. The radios can be put in many different languages. The one thing that really changed is the commercial area down in the mine. There used to be nothing down below and not there are bathrooms and also cafes, gift shops, even emerald shops and a spa. Very nice set up and definitely worth the trip up to Zipa for the day. Parking was 8,000 cop for the day as well.

This tour was such an amazing and memorable tour! Jorge was our tour guide and i 100% recommend him as the tour guide! Hes fluent in both english and spanish. We did the pablo escobar tour and the City of colombia tour with him and we absolutely loved every minute! It was a full day tour for both tours to be completed. He personally knew so many details that it would've been difficult to know had it been a different tour guide. Definitely book this tour and all for Jorge!!
