Things to do in Yorkshire, England: The Best Lessons & Workshops

June 26, 2021 Russell Mellin

Yorkshire (/ˈjɔːrkʃər, -ʃɪər/; abbreviated Yorks), formally known as the County of York, is a historic county of Northern England and the largest in the United Kingdom. Due to its great size in comparison to other English counties, functions have been undertaken over time by its subdivisions, which have also been subject to periodic reform. Throughout these changes, Yorkshire has continued to be recognised as a geographical territory and cultural region. The name is familiar and well understood across the United Kingdom and is in common use in the media and the military, and also features in the titles of current areas of civil administration such as North Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, West Yorkshire and East Riding of Yorkshire.

Swinton Park Birds of Prey

This is a wonderful centre which offers many experiences for the whole family. Falconry, Birds of Prey hunting, demonstrations, childrens events etc. They also have fun things like Hawk and Bafrn Owl Ring Bearing and Dove release for weddings. The center is found at Swinton Park, but is owned and run by Sophie Abbott. Very much appreciated experience!

As a very special birthday present I was treated to a day at the bird of prey centre which I have to say was absolutely amazing. Mandy, who looked after us all day, was extremely knowledgeable and answered all our questions. Over the course of the day we flew 8 different birds from Joey the booboos owl through to Ellie the Eagle Owl. As it was a special day there were just the two of us so we each had plenty of opportunity to interact with each of the birds and fly them. Each of them has their own character and Mandy was with us throughout the day to make sure we were always safe and handling the birds correctly. We had a delicious lunch at the bistro and a tour of the estate. I cannot recommend this experience enough if you love your birds of prey - it was the most wonderful day and made a fabulous present that I will always remember!

I attended a Webinar on the Geography of the Yorkshire Dales was really interesting, covered geography and geology, flora and fauna, and some fascinating insights into the human history of the area too. Mark is really enthusiastic and super knowledgeable, I didn't want it to end, and to be honest I don't think he did either! Strong recommend, makes you want to be out there, which sadly at present isn't possible...

We attended the Introduction to Wine tasting day in Leeds at Stockdales restaurant. We thought we knew a little bit about wine already but wow we were wrong! This was a fantastic day from start to finish, very relaxed but so informative, what they don’t know about wine isn’t worth knowing and banished a lot of the myths I’d heard and believed. We’re now drinking a larger variety of wines rather than going for the same bottle every time. The wines sampled were also available at supermarkets so easily accessible if you want them again. This day is suitable for complete novices and also if you’ve been a wine fan for years, we learnt loads! Also the venue was great and included a delicious dinner. Make sure you get the train or bus home, we were a wee bit merry as kept going back for another ‘taste’ of the delicious wines. We will be back again for a different session to continue our education. Thank you!

I have been going to the Wednesday evening class "make your own project" since January . I started sewing in September of the previous year. This class is amazing. The setting is calm, friendly and spacious. I was welcomed by Nadine who was totally interested in my project and has always been interested to help. It is an informal atmosphere and I have totall confidence in what Nadine advises. If you want to imagine what it's like, it is like walking into a John Lewis haberdashery department and working on a project with a group of friends. I have continued to book.

I'm one of those people who points a camera on automatic settings and knows nothing about my camera ... and just what more I could do with it. So, this year I decided it was time to find out more in the hope that I could start taking better photographs ... and to know what I was actually doing. My main aim initially was to make my photographs sharper. The 4 hours I spent with Mike exceeded my expectations. Mike is a great tutor ... and very patient. He made me think of the Strictly Come Dancing professionals who have to be so patient and encouraging, in many cases, to complete beginners. Anyway, I'm definitely taking better and sharper photographs; feel a little more knowledgeable; feel challenged to think, in some ways, differently about composition, and feel I've been encouraged to learn more. So thank you Mike.
