Things to do in Yorkshire, England: The Best Children's Museums

January 19, 2022 Harland Bartelt

Yorkshire (/ˈjɔːrkʃər, -ʃɪər/; abbreviated Yorks), formally known as the County of York, is a historic county of Northern England and the largest in the United Kingdom. Due to its great size in comparison to other English counties, functions have been undertaken over time by its subdivisions, which have also been subject to periodic reform. Throughout these changes, Yorkshire has continued to be recognised as a geographical territory and cultural region. The name is familiar and well understood across the United Kingdom and is in common use in the media and the military, and also features in the titles of current areas of civil administration such as North Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, West Yorkshire and East Riding of Yorkshire.

We visited with our 9 and 7 year olds who loved the whole experience. The staff are extremely friendly and informative and the whole experience is very organised with very limited numbers for each session and family groups rotated around the four dig sites. Parents, be prepared to dig too! There was then time to look around the rest of the exhibits and the whole experience took just over an hour. Highly recommended.

Malton Museum

Malton Museum holds a nationally important collection of Roman artefacts. Both rooms have new displays and fun hands-on activities. One sets the scene using history and stories from all period, accompanied by changing displays featuring old favourites, iconic objects and new acquisitions. 'Horse Power' our new exhibition, focuses on the importance of horses in this area from earliest times. From Malton's Roman cavalry regiment, its well-known medieval horse fair. The power of horses on the farms and in transporting people and goods, through to the pivotal role played in the racing world by local breeders, trainers and jockeys.

Eureka! The National Children's Museum

We're an award-winning children's museum in Halifax, West Yorkshire, with more than 400 interactive exhibits which inspire children aged 0-11 to learn about themselves and the world around them through imagination, discovery and, most importantly, play!

Reviewed By zuppinp3 - Sawston, United Kingdom

We used Tesco vouchers so should have been £61.75 for our family of 5 but we got in for 25p ! There was plenty to keep the children entertained with a whole area about the human body and how it works and loads of hands on, interactive exhibits. Snacks and drinks in the cafe seem rather pricy but meals looked reasonable value. The gift shop gives 10% off before 11am but you have to ask/remind them otherwise they will charge full price. Some of the staff are really good at interacting with the children which adds to the excitement for them. All staff are friendly and welcoming. We spent around 4 and a half hours here and could have been longer if it wasn't so warm inside.

The Endeavour Experience Whitby

Welcome to The Endeavour Experience. The only life size replica of Captain Cook’s HM Bark Endeavour in the northern hemisphere, and Whitby’s newest family tourist attraction. Visitors can climb aboard and experience interactive features and displays that will help you imagine what life was like for the 95 crew members during the three-year voyage. During your visit go below decks to the Orlop Cafe and enjoy a light lunch followed by delicious homemade cakes and traybakes.

Here with family, the restaurant on the Endeavour is free to enter and separate from the attraction itself. It’s as you would imagine, below deck on a ship. The staff are incredibly friendly and nothing is too much. We opted for small fish, chips and mushy peas x5 (£6.50). Be under no illusion that what you will receive is small. They apologised for the wait but it wasn’t a long wait for fresh fish and chips cooked to absolute perfection. Thoroughly enjoyed coming here and we will be back.
