Things to do in York, England: The Best Art Galleries

April 15, 2022 Rebbecca Marino

Just two hours north of London by rail, the city of York holds 1900 years' worth of history in its ancient walls. The Romans built the city in 71 AD, and the Vikings captured it in 866 AD. Stop by the Yorkshire Museum and Gardens for a look at what the Roman and Vikings left behind (they must have packed light when they left). From there, move on to the York Castle Museum for a not-so-quick overview of the most recent 400 years.

We had purchased online an extremely battered canvas (from 1914) signed by the Swiss artist Louis Moilliet that had at some point been torn from its frame. The paint in some areas had begun to flake off, and the condition overall was frankly appalling. We were recommended to consult York Fine Arts about the possibility of restoration, and have been absolutely delighted with the restorer's work. The delicate canvas has been backed to prevent further damage, and the paintwork restored to its original condition. Not only has the restoration turned out much better than we could have expected: communications about the work (estimate, time for completion, etc) were excellent from the start. We have no hesitation in recommending the gallery. A historic painting has been brought back to life!
