Kindred Spirits

Reviewed By DublinDiane

I had wanted for some time to visit Middleton to see this sculpture , having read how the Choctaw Indians , hearing of the Great Hunger in Ireland in 1847, managed to raise $170 ( a huge sum in those days) & sent it to help relieve the suffering. They themselves had been dispossessed of their sacred lands & forcibly moved to Oklahoma during one of the harshest winters on record , & many of them had died en route. In spite of their own suffering , they had the generosity & kindness of spirit to remember the starving Irish & this monument is a fitting tribute to them. It is really beautiful & the stainless steel feathers reflect the colours of the sun as the light changes. It is situated in Bailic Park off the East Cork Parkway N25 , turn off at the L 3621 & it’s right beside you. Congratulations & well done to the Irish artist Alex Pentek for this fitting tribute to those Choctaw Indians.

We enjoyed this Waterville and the sundial sculpture. There are a couple of other sculptures there, too.

Annie Moore Statue

Reviewed By Popshots - Cork, Ireland

If you walk down to the Liner Terminal or the Museum, you will find this beautiful memorial to the first person who left these shores and landed on the newly-opened Ellis Island terminal in New York. Annie Moore is a symbol of the countless thousands who left our shores, sometimes as prisoners, other times as emigrants, but all essentially never to return!

Lusitania Memorial

The striking statue may make people think from a distance that it is a memorial of the Titanic. However, on getting closer you realise that it is in fact for the Lusitania. It is a reminder of that tragedy.

Not far from bellmullet the views of the coast are amazing. The sun shone and we were in awe coming off the beaten track to witness such a spot. Beautiful. Rough access roads so just take care driving along but absolutely worth it.
