Yr Ysgwrn

Newtown Textile Museum

Museum is now closed for the winter but will reopen on 25 May. depending, of course, on the regulations at the time. When opening is possible we will continue to offer visitors the opportunity to book timed-entry visits, as well as being able to come in without pre-booking if the numbers in the Museum at the time permit it. Bookings are now available on Eventbrite. As you would expect, safe-distance requirements and all the other Covid-safe measures will be in place. The Museum gives a great insight into the woollen industry, its boom and bust cycles and the effect on the development and growth of Newtown during the 1800s. It covers the story of wool from fleece to flannel, and tells the story of the families who lived and worked in this rare building from that period. It opens during the summer months.

A really interesting building, which has much improved since being taken over from the local council. Every room was informative, with displays and artefacts, and the volunteer staff were friendly and happy to answer questions. A pity that some of the more interactive activities were not available, due to the Covid restrictions, but that cannot be helped in the current circumstances, and it didn't spoil our visit. Well worth a visit!!

South Wales Aviation Museum

SWAM is a new unique Aviation museum based in South Wales near the former RAF St Athan. We allow visitors to get up and personal with our aircraft and displays, with different aircraft being open. We are only currently open at weekends and bank holidays, and while we have free parking, there is a suggested donation for adults of £5. We have a cafe and a shop with there is limited disabled access.

My wife & I visited today, we pulled into a busy car park which was lovely to see on the day storm Jorge arrived. The place is amazing, lots to see, interact with and fulfill childhood dreams ( I sat in a phantom cockpit)! There is so much more than aircraft, items from the 2nd World War in 1 room, jet engines dotted about & a great crowd of knowledgeable volunteers who are really enthusiastic. I will be going again & am counting down the days.

Lovely fresh space that makes local history engaging. My 8year old daughter & I spent time exploring the interactive & static historical interpretations. Look for the ones on the book shelves! We also spent time reading on the sofa. Looking forward to the opening of the archives next month. Now the lovely café has opened the whole building is buzzing and we met lots of people.

Conwy Castle

Advance booking required Built in the late 13th century and reputed to be haunted by a past resident, this picturesque castle was built for King Edward I and is a perfect example of the "concentric castle" design. The displayed opening times are our general pattern. Please check the Cadw website for specific times and days, including closures.

An amazing 800 year old castle. The more you know about the history of North Wales and the Celts, the more you will appreciate the role this castle played in Welsh history (British/Welsh history 101 : Celts invaded by Romans, Invaded by Vikings, Saxons, Angles etc. Invaded by the French Norman’s etc etc. Each invasion pushed the Celts back into the mountains reducing their lands) Try and visit in dry weather as the stone steps up the towers can be a bit slippery. One tip - last weekend of September there is free admission!!!

This is a ‘must do’ visit if you’re anywhere near Aberystwyth. It was a Victorian Theatre in its early life but now an excellent museum has been created. We spent Two hours looking around which was interesting and thought provoking. There is an excellent cafe serving morning coffee and lunch time snacks. A truly worthwhile visit if in the area........
