Royaumont Abbey was founded in 1228 by Louis IX, the future Saint Louis, with the support of his mother, Blanche of Castile. Richly endowed by the king, who enjoyed spending time there, the Abbey achieved great renown in the 13th century. In the 1930s, Henry Goüin decided to open Royaumont to struggling artists and intellectuals. The project was made permanent 26 years later, in 1964, with the establishment of a foundation, the Fondation Royaumont (Goüin-Lang) pour le Progrès des Sciences de l'Homme. Thus in the course of the 20th century, having previously served as a monastery, a textile factory, a village and a noviciat, the Abbey was transformed into an important venue for gatherings of several generations of French and foreign intellectuals working in the humanities and music, and eventually became an internationally renowned centre of artistic research, training and production.

My wife and I go here all the time to walk around the grounds and get away from the madding crowd! If you want a little nature in your life come here. The Abbey has been restored and there is a working farm on the property. This is a tranquil place and you can just come and sit in the grounds. We just passed today coming from Chantilly and just a drive-by gives us some pleasure! The coffee shop has some food but people come mainly for coffee, drinks and deserts. The service is very good and the people very nice.
