Vorderer Gosausee

Reviewed By atw63 - Birmingham, United Kingdom

I’ve been visiting the Salzkammergut region for 5 or 6 years now, always parking myself in Bad Ischl, and using that town as a base. One of my end-of-holiday treats is a walk around Gosausee (Lake Gosau) followed by lunch in one of the local Alms. I always use public transport, so it’s simply a case of jumping on the 542 at Bad Ischl Rail/Bus station, then an hour later I’m virtually lakeside (Check the bus timetables, since the service isn’t too frequent). There is ample parking for cars. The bus stop is right next to a cable car which’ll whisk you to the upper station in a few minutes. The views en-route to the bus terminus and in the cable car are lovely. The lower cable car station is just behind Gasthof Gosausee which offers food and accommodation. There are also a few souvenir/ice-cream shops dotted around. I usually get straight into a circumnavigation of the lake, which takes me just over an hour, and as well as the scenery being superb, there are little distractions en-route such as a big copper funnel set up so you can hear the amplified, gentle trickle of water, and a pipe where you can sample the cool, mountain-filtered water. As well as virtually unlimited scenic photo opportunities (glaciers, clear water, jagged peaks etc.) there’s also the potential to watch rock climbers. The lake that you’re walking around is called Vorderer Gosausee (Front Gosau Lake), but at roughly 50% of the way around, you can follow another trail to Hinterer Gosausee (Rear Gosau Lake) where I’ve heard there’s a great hut called Holzmeister Alm at the far end. Sadly, the bus timetable has never made it favourable for me to hike to the rear lake, since it’d probably take me another 45min+ to make the Alm from where the trail branches. So, having lapped the lake, I tend to return to the lower cable car station, take a ride to the top, where there are numerous opportunities to hike to other huts for lunch. The area is riddled with trails of varied length, and huts aplenty, it’s also one of the calmest places I know, which is absolutely great for people who enjoy perfect scenery (come rain or shine) and who just want to enjoy the great outdoors.

Grottenbahn

The amusement park takes you back into a fairy tale world of dwarfs and gnomes. The highlight of the attraction is a small train with a dragon-head at the engine. The train takes you through a rather dark tunnel along which are scenes from various fairytales and mood lighting at some places. Outside, you have a replica old-town market. The spokes radiating from the central market house scenes from popular fairy tales like the red riding hood, Rapunzel, snow-white, sleeping beauty and the likes. Kids will absolutely love this attraction and the grown ups will enjoy it as well.
