This was the fort that supplied hadrians wall for the Romans’ , reconstructed buildings and friendly willing helpful staff made this a gem of a place to visit , little known to ordinary folk it was a lovely treat to find this , lucky we got to see it as they shut at the end of sept till next season , we’ll worth a visit for anyone interested in the Roman history of the region .

A beautiful place if you are after some peace and quiet. It’s a lovely little house of worship on the inside. I got married here many moons ago and even now, when I come here, it’s still gives me that feeling of tranquility.

Hadrian's Wall

Reviewed By GuinnessGirl73 - Nashport, United States

We traveled from Newcastle Upon Tyne to Hexam by train. At the train station in Hexam is a bus stop where the AD122 bus stop is located. It runs about every hour and stops at any site you want. We stopped at the Housesteads site and were not disappointed. It is so beautiful there. The lush green rolling hills of the countryside is such a lovely backdrop to the beautiful ruins of a Roman fort. There is a walk from the bus drop off to the site itself but you walk among sheep and hills so we didn't mind at all. There is a small museum, gift shop and theater that shows a brief film to give you an idea of what happened at the site. We'd like to go back and visit other sites but we were catching a train later that evening out of Newcastle to Edinburgh and didn't want to miss it.

Segedunum Roman Fort and Museum

Part of the Hadrian's Wall UNESCO World Heritage Site, Segedunum is the most excavated Roman fort along the Wall with surviving foundations of many buildings and part of the Wall itself. With a large interactive museum, a section of Wall and a 35 metre high viewing tower providing outstanding views across Tyneside there is also a changing programme of exhibitions. There is also a seasonal programme of events including historical re-enactments with gladiators and artisans, to regular events for families during school holidays. Kids under 16 always go free.
