Things to do in Tokyo, Kanto: The Best Classes & Workshops

May 29, 2021 Enriqueta Cusson

Tradition collides with pop culture in Tokyo, where you can reverently wander ancient temples before rocking out at a karaoke bar. Wake up before the sun to catch the lively fish auction at the Tsukiji Market, then refresh with a walk beneath the cherry blossom trees that line the Sumida River. Spend some time in the beautiful East Gardens of the Imperial Palace, then brush up on your Japanese history at the Edo-Tokyo Museum. Don’t forget to eat as much sushi, udon noodles, and wagashi (Japanese sweets) as your belly can handle.

My 2 teenage daughters and I thoroughly enjoyed our time with Tomoko on a rainy Tokyo day. From the time Tomoko met us at our hotel lobby to when she bade us farewell with a surprise little gift, we are grateful to her for opening up her lovely home and sharing her cooking knowledge and insights into Japanese culture. There are many menus to choose from on the website. We chose the gyoza and ramen menu. We ended up to be the only students on the day - what a treat! My 2 teenage girls loved learning how to wrap the gyoza. Tomoko is so warm and friendly. We felt like we were a guest in her house rather than at a commercial cooking school. I have been to many cooking classes around the world and this would rank very highly as a personal intimate experience to learn about Japanese home style cooking. Thank you Tomoko and I hope our paths cross again!

I have been meaning to do one of these classes since last year and I finally did myself a favor and booked 2 classes (one class one weekend). Result? I absolutely love it! The ikkanbari class for me was therapeutic, it was easy to follow directions, the materials was well organized & well prepared. The instructors were personable, friendly and welcoming. It was just a great experience to create something so beautiful afterwards. As for the indigo dying class, i too was very pleased with the outcome. Once again the studio was well prepared and organized. The fabric provided was generous and so was the indigo dye. I loved the background information behind it and the short scientific aspect too. There was coffee & some treats for everyone, although I was so immersed in my crafting I barely had time to get coffee. It was very thoughtful though. I would highly recommend BLJ to anyone visiting or even to expats that are looking for something to make & do & take home something beautiful in the end. Thank you to the staff for such a fun craft. I'll be back again soon :)

We booked a sushi course as a surprise gift for my daughter's anniversary. We had ms. Nobu as guide for the market tour and ms. Kanori as cooking instructor. Amazing experience! During the market tour we had the possibility to taste and shop for original ingredients that we brought back home and during the cooking lesson we had the opportunity to learn some very effective techniques to produce nice looking (and tasty) sushi! During the tasting session we were offered a sample of Japanese Shōchūs to match our own artistic creations. A lot of fun, a lot of information, an unforgettable experience. Arigatou gozaimasu Kanori, Arigatou gozaimasu Nobu!

I attended Tomoko's lass with my daughter. It was very difficult to find a genuine class that would introduce sumi-e to us. Once in the class I discovered this was because the art together with other traditional Japanese arts are becoming less popular and teachers are harder to find. We had a wonderfully reflective, informative and creative time understanding the history of sumi-e, the techniques involved and the philosophy behind the art. Although we strove to achieve beauty, at the end of the session it didn't matter if our work was not "perfect" because Tomoko made us feel complete regardless of what it looked like. Tomoko was informative, enthusiastic and supportive thoughout the process. I would recommend the Rimpa Sumie Club to anyone who really wants to experience the art of sumie.
