Things to do in Tokyo, Kanto: The Best Classes & Workshops

May 19, 2021 Diedre Savory

Tradition collides with pop culture in Tokyo, where you can reverently wander ancient temples before rocking out at a karaoke bar. Wake up before the sun to catch the lively fish auction at the Tsukiji Market, then refresh with a walk beneath the cherry blossom trees that line the Sumida River. Spend some time in the beautiful East Gardens of the Imperial Palace, then brush up on your Japanese history at the Edo-Tokyo Museum. Don’t forget to eat as much sushi, udon noodles, and wagashi (Japanese sweets) as your belly can handle.

We spent a delightful morning with Mayuko learning to make bento boxes with panda rice balls. Mayuko is extremely friendly and positive, and a great teacher - we learned some cool techniques which we've since incorporated into our own cooking since returning to our home country, and my wife went out shopping straight after the class to get equipment to make bento boxes of our own. We did a few different activities and classes while we were in Japan for a month and this was easily the most fun we had. I heartily recommend this class to anyone who wants to have a fun morning with a great host and learn some cool things about Japanese cuisine.

This cheerful and informative cooking class was a highlight of our trip to Tokyo. The class was held at Sato's home and he immediately made us feel like we were visiting an old friend as we learned about the ingredients, cooking methods and Japanese culture beyond cuisine - and at the end we got to have an amazing meal! Thank you for the wonderful experience, Sato, hope we get to cook together again another time.

I attended this class with my husband and highly recommend it to anyone who wants to experience Japanese culture in a beautiful art form. The teacher was very knowledgeable and showed us great patience and kindness throughout. We both left the class happy and satisfied that we had achieved something and had a wonderful memory in Japan that we will treasure. We also left with our practice papers and our chosen character on a presentation card to keep as a memento. 10/10 - definitely recommended
