Once known as The Land of the Mountains, the 10,000-square-mile province of Tirol is a wonderland of gushing rivers, lush meadows and rugged peaks. Fantastic hiking trails wind along paths through the Zillertal Alps. Famed resort towns confetti the mountainsides, including Kitzbühel, St. Anton, Ischgl and Seefeld, site of some events in the 1964 and 1976 Winter Games. Compact capital Innsbruck is a medieval gem. The Tirolean identity is strong: Expect to see lederhosen and feathered hats.

We spent the afternoon here on Christmas Eve and it was amazing. There had been snow the night before, so there was fresh powder on the ground and it also started snowing whilst we were there. It was delightful to walk around this park in amongst the animals and see them up close. You would never get this opportunity in the wild. We then ventured into the restaurant for a warm drink and to shelter from the snow. It was Christmas Eve and there were large families gathering to celebrate Christmas. Us two girls from Australia felt like we had stumbled into an Austrian families Christmas and it was so special. We drank our hot chocolate as we watched the snow fall outside. It is a Christmas Eve we will always remember. On a side note, the park only accepts cash, so make sure you have enough before you head up as there are no ATMs.

Don’t generally ‘do zoos’ but really enjoyed our visit to the Alpenzoo. The zoo is located on the side of the mountain, with the buildings and enclosures imaginatively placed to make the most of the geography of the site. Some of the footpaths are quite steep but are laid out to continually surprise you with something new to see. Great that all the animals are native alpine species - no lions or tigers! Would visit again if in Innsbruck.
