Things to do in Split, Dalmatia: The Best Tours

September 24, 2021 Alice Mieles

The largest city on the Adriatic Coast, seaside delight Split has been under Roman, Venetian, Austrian, French, Italian and Yugoslav control. There is an abundance of restaurants and wine cellars. Sites such as Diocletian's Palace and Mausoleum, the Grgur Ninski Statue and the Cathedral and Bell Tower of St. Domnius justify its position as a UNESCO-designated World Heritage Site. The city's coves offer several lovely beaches, including central Bacvice. Ferries link Split to Dalmatian summer resorts.

This is a walking tour of Split with a local historian! I will guide you through all of the relevant sites in the center of Split in a logical manner following the cities development through time. That covers all of Split's history from ancient Roman times till today. I have a Master's degree in history and I can tell you so much more about history. By that, I don't mean only about the history of Split. I can tell you anything you want to know about Croatia in general since I always welcome and encourage questions! I worked as a history teacher so I try and use all of the teaching skills I earned through education and practice. Interaction and dialogue are very important during my tour! Also, I am a local from Split, I've been living here for my whole life. I try to use multi-media as much as possible so I carry a tablet with me which I use to demonstrate a lot of things I am mentioning. The tablet also has a free Wi-Fi hotspot on it for my group!

Inclusions: Free Wi-Fi hotspot

Exclusions: No Admission Tickets Included

We booked a private tour of the Palace and it was the best thing we did. Started early, 0900, as recommended by Toni, and it paid to beat the crowds. Toni was simply excellent and brought the City to life through the ages. The tour was well paced not rushed at all and although advertised at around 2 hours Toni gave us 3 hours of his time and the more you asked the more he was willing to share. Forget the big group tours and choose Toni you won’t be disappointed. Just excellent 5 star.

Highly recommend for a real authentic experience. My husband and I are digital nomads and we have experienced a lot of different tours around Europe but this was an absolute highlight for us. Spending the day with our guide Jadran was just like having a local friend take us out to all the best spots in Split, we felt like we got the very best local experience. Jadran was super knowledgeable, we had such a great time! We visited some amazing spots that you wouldn't get to experience on your own. We went to a fabulous family run winery and also had an incredible feast at a local home, it was very unique and something you can't experience in a restaurant. It was a long day but it felt well timed and very relaxed, we also came home absolutely stuffed from all the wonderful food! If you love food, wine, a taste of history and good company this is the perfect tour.

We booked a private Plitvice National Park tour from Split from Pelican Tour. The booking process was easy, you pick the tour, the date, and you pay right there on the website with credit card. There can be a maximum of 8 people in your group for private tour in one car, and the price is very reasonable and even comparable to if you joined group tours, depending on how many people you have. The driver, Bojan, contacted us the day before to confirm pickup location and time. On the day of the tour he showed up on time and he was friendly and professional. It took less than 4 hours to arrive Plitvice and the car ride was clean and comfortable. Make sure you break for restroom before getting out of the freeway, when there are still resting areas. It was difficult finding one near the park, and there’s long lines for restrooms at the park. We met our guide at park entrance, where we also purchased tickets. To our pleasant surprise we could pay by credit card for the tickets; the website said cash only. Our tour guide Nikolai (sorry if I misspelled) accompanied us for the tour and he was very friendly and knowledgeable, also great at taking pictures. He discussed with us on the route we will be taking and if we are interested to do certain trails. It worked out well and of course the park was magnificent especially with fall colors. The park is a must see if you are in Croatia. We also had a little time for lunch right inside the park before continuing on. The walk is not difficult and at our own pace. It was relaxing and we didn’t feel rushed. Make sure to let your guide know if there are certain place you want to see early on so he can plan it. There was this signature view you see on many postcards we wanted to see but it wasn’t on the route we were on, and it was too late when we realized it. The route he took us on was still amazing and he felt it was a better way to see the park. After four hours we were taken back to our driver; there were quite a bit of stairs going up in this last walk to exit. We arrived our hotel round 6pm. The park was so beautiful and ideally we would want to spend more time, but we feel four hours walk is just the right amount of time for people like us who are not especially sporty. Overall a great company and great tour if you have to visit Plitvice from Split.
