Craft Renaissance

Reviewed By bryan60plus - Herefordshire, United Kingdom

On driving out of Abergavenny we decided to look for a garden centre or place where we could have a light lunch, theres not really much on the main A40 between Abergavenny and Ross on Wye so we headed for Usk when we came across this craft centre with a cafe inside advertising tea, coffee and light lunches. On entering a converted barn very contemporary in design with a craft centre in one side and upstairs, the cafe occupying the other half downstairs with a few tables upstairs. The greeting was very friendly and conversation made very easy, we were advised that if we wanted soup there was pea,ham and mint or potato and leek. There looked to be a quite a comprehensive menu from toasted sandwiches, fresh local made cakes. There was also a steak and ale pie, we saw one being served and looked extremely delicious, we just stuck with the soup followed by a fruit scone, strawberry jam and clotted cream. Soup was thick, fresh local bread and had a full taste of the pea and ham. The bread was warm, 2 different types were served with it, granary and seeded, with butter. After the freshly baked scone, moist very very tasty. All went down a treat and finished with a cafetière of fresh coffee. Afterwards we looked through the gallery of extraordinary animal sculptures made from chicken wire, beautiful oil painting and knickknacks from leather belts, jewellery and leather-bound note books. All in all this was a delightful experience, the husband and wife team were very chatty but without getting in your face, we will certainly go back. If you do visit, try and guess the wife’s accent!
