Things to do in Scottish Highlands, Scotland: The Best Nature & Wildlife Tours

November 9, 2021 Renato Branum

The moody, romantic Scottish Highlands start at Loch Lomond just north of Glasgow. Comprising a slew of mountain ranges, this sparsely populated land is best seen by train on the West Highland Line. Mountains, lochs, bright heather and rhododendrons give way to white sand beaches and rugged coves as the train nears Mallaig. For a more active take on the region, hike the West Highland Way or visit the Trossachs National Park. Ben Nevis, a popular climbing spot, looms over the town of Fort William.

Mountain and Sea Guides

Mountain and Sea Guides is based in Applecross running all year round adventure activity on the great sea lochs and mountains of NW Scotland. We also take our staff and expertise overseas running sea kayak expeditions in the British Columbia wilderness in Canada, the jaw dropping scenery of the Arctic Norwegian Lofoten Islands and in the warm Dalmatian Islands of Croatia. SUMMER - sea kayak, climbing, mountainwalking, gorge walking and more: Our summer season is split between a variety of sea kayaking trips, all aimed at beginner and intermediate level, and summer hill walking and mountaineering. We run shorter 2 hour and half day sessions for people who want a taste of the activity, to enjoy time together and to see the true beauty of the area. Alternatively, join a weekend introduction or 5 day long expedition for more experience and more exposure to Scotland's hidden secrets. WINTER - climbing, mountaineering, safety training, skills, mountainwalking, snowholing & we're still open for sea kayaking!: In the winter our attention turns firmly towards winter mountaineering allowing a year of seasonally adventurous activities from half day trips to full multi day expeditions. With some of the greatest challenges right on our doorstep, and guides who have been working in the area all their lives, you'll be guaranteed a week of exhilaration, learning, superb wilderness scenery and self achievement. GROUPS - young, old, all abilities, individuals, couples, groups of friends or family, workplace groups, university groups, military, fire, police: Our groups are made up of outdoor enthusiasts from all over the UK, Europe and further afield experiencing the best that Scottish mountain and sea based activity has to offer. We're fortunate to be based in the most varied part of the Highlands benefiting from the gulf stream and a geological history which has created skylines and seascapes which make Applecross and Wester Ross an outdoor adventurers playground. We can cater for groups of friends and families to single people who are interested in meeting new people and doing something unique with their leisure time. We've had adventurers as young as seven and as old as eighty and people with disability. Very few of our activities are unattainable and we can design programmes to suit any group based on our set themes on our various web pages. If you want to get a group of family, friends or a workplace group exclusively onto any activity experience all you have to do is email us, tell us what you'd like, how many days you'd prefer and some ideas around your aspirations - we'll get back to you with a trip design and costs. INSTRUCTORS - chosen for their ability to be safe, informative, friendly and able to work with a huge variety of people: Our instructors are qualified within the different disciplines demanded by each type of activity. As such we are governed by the safe practices of the national bodies the British Canoe Union and the UKMTA, AMI. Our staff have up to the minute wilderness first aid training and certification and Mountain & Sea Guides has been awarded the Investor in People Award twice, for our commitment to training, working practices and standards.
