Things to do in Scottish Borders, Scotland: The Best Fun Activities & Games

December 17, 2021 Jacquiline Darosa

A short distance from Edinburgh is a landscape strewn with sturdy hill forts, ancient castles and ruined abbeys that hints at the tumult of the past. It's quite at odds with the picturesque rolling, if windswept, sheep-studded hills and quiet valleys that make all seem agreeably placid to today’s visitor. At its heart are the ruins of four medieval abbeys with Jedburgh, the most complete, the best to visit first for its insights into monastic life. Of the others, Melrose is both the pick of the bunch, and also close to Abbotsford, the sometime home of the Romantic novelist Sir Walter Scott, and a splendid receptacle for his engrossing collection of historical curios. There are fine country houses to visit, notably Mellerstain for its exquisite Robert Adam interiors, and Manderston, the enjoyable swan song of the Edwardian Country House. Anglers should note that the River Tweed is also one of Scotland’s finest salmon-fishing rivers.

We had a superb time clay pigeon shooting at Don Coyote. The adventure begins with the Landy ride up to the shooting range. Our instructor was excellent; friendly, knowledgeable, helpful and extremely patient with us novices. With his expert guidance we all hit way more clays than any of us ever expected - particularly given it was blowing a hoolie up there... Top Tip; it is way up on a Scottish hillside, so if you go outside of summertime, make sure you take some warm clothes. I'm glad I did. But the little cabin with the wood burner was still a very welcome retreat between our turns at shooting. A great, enjoyable and fun activity. It was over and we'd all had our 30 shots all to quickly. I would definitely go again and I would definitely recommend.

Really nice place to spend a few hours, for both kids and parents. I really enjoyed the glass design and etching. Pauline was very knowledgeable and explained many of the processes and materials used for glass, metal and wood surfaces.

We swam here three times while staying in the nearby holiday park. Once was a morning visit using the small pool, the other two were the 1330 to 1430 sessions where a large inflatable assault course is put into the main pool. The children loved it, "again Daddy" was the cry. . A great resource on the north side of the town. The staff were lovely too. There's also a gym, a viewing area and some parking outside. Definitely one to do when in Eyemouth.
