Things to do in San Antonio de Areco, Central Argentina: The Best Day Trips from

March 15, 2022 Kiesha Cripe

A compact small town nearly 70 miles northwest of Buenos Aires, San Antonio de Areco is in the heart of the Argentine Pampas region. It’s a great 1½-hour day trip by car or bus from Buenos Aires—or the perfect jumping-off point for those who choose to visit at a nearby estancia, or a traditional large rural ranch and estate. Major attractions here include the colonial sights of San Antonio de Areco itself, the Museum of the Gaucho (which celebrates Argentine cowboys), and a variety of estancias themselves, which are located within two hours of San Antonio de Areco. If you don’t feel like planning your own itinerary, several tour and travel companies will coordinate your visit and arrange your estancia stay.

We chose Patrick for his rave reviews and we were not disappointed. Patrick picked us up at the ship after our cruise (6 of us with lots of luggage) . A spacious van awaited us with our private driver who stayed with our luggage when we stopped to sight see with Patrick. Patrick knows Buenos Aires and treated us royally. The best fun was when he found a small out of the way restaurant in La Boca called El Gran Paraiso for lunch. Talk about local flavor....the wine was awesome. We had steak and sausage cooked on the grill... the best steak I've ever had. Patrick took us to the airport with plenty of time to spare. Our cruise ended March 7, 2020 just as the Coronavirus was heating up and Patrick had many future cancellations. We hope that he's doing well and that people will once again begin to travel. If you get to Buenos Aires, you must call Patrick - in fact get him in advance because he's a rare find! Great job Patrick...thanks for the wonderful day and hope you're well!

Hola!!! I can't say enough great things about Pat. I took this tour solo and had the best time!!! He is a great historian, but more importantly I felt very comfortable with him one-on-one. He went above and beyond to make this one of the best tours that I have ever experienced. People will say that you can go on your own, DON'T-go with Pat and you will not only have the best experience, but see everything that El Tigre has to offer. You won't be disappointed, it was worth every penny!!!!!

The Staff was super efficient in communication in advance and made an effort to arrange things as good as possible. The estancia we visited was very beautiful, genuine and well-maintained. Everyone was kind and eager for us to have a great time. If you have horse riding skills, you can ask them to arrange a better horse to do some extra galloping around the fields. The horses are amazing! Juan, the “horse whisperer’, was like nothing I have ever seen before: complete control over a horse with just a gentle touch and his voice. Service and food were excellent, the estancia: a dream. I’m eager to go back and spend more time there. Asado was perfect, one of the best BBQ meals I had over 6 weeks traveling in Argentina. Highly recommend!

We really enjoyed this virtual live experience all together. And even-though we decided to "only" watch, due to the time difference (after dinner for us), we had a great time learning more about how to properly cook Empanadas. Thanks again to Camila for making it very interesting, "tasteful"and fun and giving us the chance to discover the world of Empanadas and also sharing insights about Argentina with us.

I have to say I was a bit disappointed. We were the last to be picked up, joining a group in the tour van. The guide was informative as we drove through the many neighborhoods. When we arrived at the river, we were surprised to be informed that we would not continue with the group. We were escorted to the boat and introduced to another guide. We had no interaction with this guide at all, until we exited the boat. When we stopped at a corner, we were told by the guide that we would have to walk over 4 blocks to our hotel. I had my confirmation paper with me stating we had transportation to and from the hotel. She said "No one is getting dropped of at their hotel". She was a bit rude about it, and said we could walk to the Hilton. I informed her we were not staying at the Hilton, but at the Sheraton. "Oh, well that is only 3 blocks". It was a very hot day, over 90, and my husband has a heart condition. I had paid for full transportation. She would not discuss it at all and we walked, hoping not to get lost, to our hotel. Would not recommend this tour.
