Things to do in Saint Paul, Minnesota (MN): The Best Tours

September 14, 2021 Emerita Lamoureux

Saint Paul has been called the last city of the East primarily because early developers built it to fit Eastern standards: city squares or parks, towers and turrets, lofty arches, Baroque domes and elaborate adornments abound. Ideal for families and those who like to explore on foot, the capital of Minnesota offers big city attractions with small town manageability. It's an easy and scenic stroll along the banks of the Mississippi River from the Children's Museum to the Science Museum. The kids (and the young at heart) will love them both. Nearby are the grandiose State Capitol, designed by esteemed architect Cass Gilbert and the historic Como Park, which includes lovely picnic areas, a zoo and a conservatory. Also in the mix are modern museums, stately old mansions, interesting natural wonders and unique shops to browse around. Be sure to check out the stellar collection of contemporary works by local artists at the Minnesota Museum of American Art. From four-star luxury to affordable and family-friendly, Saint Paul offers a variety of lodging and dining possibilities making it a great destination for all tastes and budgets.

This escape room was one of the best yet! It is pretty challenging but it really keeps you busy the whole time! We were a bachelorette party and a group of 8. Lamae, Dr. K’s assistant while we were there, made the experience real and was very helpful. She was very friendly and stayed in character while we were in the room. I highly recommend!

Our tour guide, Doug, went above and beyond for our tour. First of all, the fact that he was game to do an outdoor tour in February was so kind. At first I thought we might like to do the Skyway tour since we'd be mostly indoors but still fairly Covid-safe with our masks. Doug suggested that this wouldn't be the best tour as many of the shops and businesses were closed. He suggested the Summit Avenue tour instead and I'm so glad we got to see it. St. Paul is so lovely and you get the bonus of being right near the cathedral as well.

For 2 hours, take a private, guided stroll along charming and historic Summit Ave. in St. Paul, Minnesota, past stately homes built during the Victorian era that are nearly perfectly preserved today. You'll hear stories about the barons and tycoons who built these homes and how their houses have survived 120 or more years of change. You'll also wind through a former back alley now transformed into a charming city street that features modern residences in historic structures. Residential architecture buffs will spot nearly every type of home style popular during the Victorian era - Queen Anne, Italianate, Georgian Revival, Neo-classical, Romanesque, Beaux Arts, Tudor and more. I took this tour with some family as a little "gals weekend" activity and it was a ton of fun! Learning more about the restaurants and their history was great, and learning more about the city was also cool. Even as St Paul natives we learned a lot of cool new facts and history that we hadn't previously known and got to try a new restaurant to us - Afro Deli (which was amazing by the way!) Would definitely recommend taking this tour and will be booking future tours with them in the future!

We took a great trip to Duluth to see the fall colors, but the highlight of the weekend was our trip to Betty's Pies north of Two Harbors for lunch. While the place was a bit busy, we were able to get in after a short wait and had a wonderful lunch and a great piece of pie. Afterwards we went up along the shoreline to the Silver Cliff tunnel on highway 61 about 15 minutes north of Betty's and spent a wonderful half hour on the scenic overlook (the path of the old highway now a pathway) looking out on Lake Superior. With just a light breeze and a warm sun, it was a wonderfully relaxing way to spend the afternoon.
