Macaw Sanctuary Natuwa

Natuwa Wildlife Sanctuary, is a place that provides refuge and protection to the wild animals that have been victims of human actions, such as hunting, the extraction from their environments and the destruction of forest habitats. These actions within natural environments of wildlife increase their vulnerability and cause immense damage to the ecosystems. Many times, the result of removing so many animals from their habitats, are physical and psychological problems that are difficult to overcome. Many of these homeless animals find the necessary attention they need at the Macaw Sanctuary Natuwa to be able to live in captivity with dignity and to find the possibility to return to their natural environments.

We stopped here on the drive back to San Jose from the tourist sites and it was the type of destination we love to support while we're traveling! Thirty years ago (or so), this was land that had been deforested by cattle ranchers. Today, they have slowly been planting native trees, gradually expanding their "forest." And within, they are a refuge for native animals who have been injured and can't return to the wild and also animals (mostly birds) who were seized as part of illegal trafficking (as in five parrots being wrapped in towels and packed in suitcases with the expectation that numbers dictate at least one will survive). The holding areas are quite large for the animals to move about comfortably. One of my concerns when I first saw this location was that this was a tourist destination where you get to "swim with the dolphins" (you know what I mean!). But it isn't ... they are there to care for the animals. For instance, they are quite emphatic that you don't even TALK to the animals - something difficult to keep yourself from doing with the primates!!! If you have ANY interest in animals for ANY reason, this is definitely a stop to make between San Jose and the Monteverde/Guanacaste sites (it is about 5-10 minutes off of the Pan American Highway)

Reserva Curu

Curu was a wonderful day trip with so many fun activities available. We ended up going back a second day because we loved it so much. When you first get there go directly to the restaurant on site and make reservations for the best lunch of the most delicious typical Costa Rican lunch of either fish or chicken and veggies, plantains, rice and beans served with fresh squeezed watermelon or lemonade....and they made french fries for the kids. The ladies cooking were so delightful and really know how to cook. I wish I could have that dish again today! And it was very reasonably priced $10/person. There are many different levels of jungle hikes where you will see lizards, macaws, spider monkeys, deer,Costa Rican raccoons, and many other animals. After the hike you can relax at the beautiful beach with few others on it...maybe a few spidermonkeys so tie up your valuables or leave them in your car trunk. There are so many activities available. We went horseback riding. My son's loved it. (8 and 5 years old) it was beautiful to see the premises and take a relaxing ride on the horses. The guide was very good with the kids. They also have tours out to Tortuga island for snorkeling and other water activity tours. But unfortunalty the wind was too high the night before so we cancelled our snorkeling tour because of clarity. But the water at the beach in Curu was clear and clean and the sand was fun to play in for my boys who like the watery sand mud piles. An amazing day trip for young and old. If you are bringing young ones...don't forget to pack snacks. The hike is only about 50min or so and water and snacks are a must..especially for my little ones. So we took small breaks. It was a really great spot to spend the day. Enjoy!
