Things to do in New Mexico, United States: The Best Ranches

July 7, 2021 Matilde Konrad

With its rich cultural heritage from Native American and Spanish settlers, New Mexico has been both a Spanish colony and a Mexican colony, and still retains a strong individual identity within the United States. The landscape is breathtaking, the food incredible, and there is a thriving cultural scene, all of which makes New Mexico, and Santa Fe in particular, a great place all year long.

Concho Hills Guest Ranch

Nestled in the foothills of New Mexico's San Mateo Mountains, award winning Concho Hills Guest Ranch offers a true west ranch vacation. Our guests praise our horseback experiences, family atmosphere, ranching activities, historical tours and fantastic scenery! Our all–inclusive rate includes your accommodation, family-style meals, and "cowboy life" activities. Located in one of the Southwest United States' most picturesque and historic areas, there is lots to do both in and out of the saddle. Here you will “ride a horse” instead of “going for a ride on a horse.” You can visit where the Paleo-Indians and later Indians lived, the Spanish Conquistadors and settlers explored and named the nearby village Magdalena. This is where the wild west existed...where the Apache wars were fought and where western icons like Elfego Baca, Captain Jack Crawford, and the Apache Kid actually rode! If you want to lend a hand with our chores or just relax, we can accommodate your ranch vacation desires.

Well, I went back. The weather was perfect, and it was time for a break from ice and snow. And, after a year of being sequestered under the veil of the pandemic I was ready for some open space and fresh air. Once again, I learned so much about riding, south-west history, roping, and shooting. Concho Hills is more than a guest ranch, it is a genuine experience with genuine people, great food, great company, and excellent horses. It’s quite a pleasure to ride out toward the sunset as far as the eye can see. Bring out your inner cowboy, rediscover the old west, stretch out and breath again. I’m there for the horses, but I like to eat too. Enjoy a variety of exquisite meals, as good as or better than mom’s home cooking. Give yourself a treat and make the trip to Concho Hills, Tim and Marilyn will take good care of you. You won’t be disappointed. I cannot wait to go back…again.

El Rancho de las Golondrinas

This living history museum, located just south of Santa Fe, recreates 18th-century ranch life. Guides, dressed in period clothing, show how people lived in early New Mexico.

Walk into El Rancho de las Golondrinas and you'll open a door and step back 300 years to experience authentic Southwest history. See first-hand how people lived, the buildings they constructed and their purpose, how they made their clothes, cooked their food and worshipped. You'll get a unique taste of everyday life in a community in the 1700s, learn about the inhabitants' hardships, their hopes and fears while exploring this exceptionally, well-maintained and preserved historic ranch. I spent 4 hours walking the grounds and talking with the knowledgeable and friendly staff. I'm a historian and learned more about New Mexico's fascinating history when visiting El Rancho de las Golondrinas.

Jack Caffrey took us on a tour of this Western Town they used for movies (still do actually). Lonesome Dove and Return to Lonesome Dove were 2 of the movies. Jack had bit parts in them. He is a hoot. You call him directly to see when he can take you on a tour. His number is 505-780-1076. He spent a lot of time with us telling us all about actors, etc. It's not cheap, but well worth it!!

Brought our kids up from Alamogordo, it's not only a nice break from the heat, but the animals are so cute. The prices are super affordable to get in, and it was so nice to see farm animals again. We brought our own lunches with us, and afterwards we looked at all of the items in the gift shop! We can't wait to come back!
