Things to do in Napo Province, Ecuador: The Best Nature & Wildlife Areas

May 12, 2022 Velvet Mowry

Napo (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈnapo]) is a province in Ecuador. Its capital is Tena. The province contains the Napo River. The province is low developed without much industrial presence. The thick rainforest is home to many natives that remain isolated by preference, descendants of those who fled the Spanish invasion in the Andes, and the Incas years before. In 2000, the province was the sole remaining majority-indigenous province of Ecuador, with 56.3% of the province either claiming indigenous identity or speaking an indigenous language.

Reserva Alto Coca

The Alto Coca Reserve is one of the few conservation and ecotourism projects that offers comfortable accommodations deep inside the roadless wilderness of Ecuador. Volcano watch; bird watch; explore a systems of trails in primary forest; ramble down stream canyons and bath in pools below waterfalls; cook over a wood fire; or practice some yoga to the rumbling of eruptions of Reventador volcano.

If you are an adventure seeker, do not miss out on this opportunity! My husband and I spent 3 days at Reserva Alto Coca, and it is truly and rainforest treasure that is a highlight of our outdoor adventures. In addition to the scenic beauty and amazing ecology, we could not have been in better hands then with Mark, Carlos, Silvia and Morpheus. Mark's knowledge of the area, history and geology was fascinating. Carlos' carpinterary of the cabins and rancho was beyond impressive, especially once you realized what it takes to get there! Silvia prepared delicious, healthy food! And Morpheus has impressive hops to scale up the muddy and steep trail. This trip was amazing! It exceeded my expectations in many ways; such as: - Mark’s professional guiding -Contingency plans for emergency situations and precautions that he has put in place for the “what if’s” -His clear communication on the trail of what was to come and how we were to approach it. ie. Getting down the waterfall with guide rope -The luxury of the building and rancho at the top. Comfortable bedding, shower with soap, toilet with TP. -Silvia’s cooking -Carlos’ carpentry work of the structures -All of the “sciency” things such as; recording new species, temperature measurer, water gauge We are planning to come back with our 3 kids in the future and have been telling our friends about this place. Thank you Mark, Carlos, Silvia, Morpheus
