This fiberglass red pumpkin welcomed us to Naoshima, the art island, as soon as our ferry from Uno entered Miyanoura Port. Placed at the water's edge, the 13-feet-high work by Japanese artist Yayaoi Kusama features her trademark polka dots. Big and black, some are actually holes that visitors can peer through from inside for a photo. Created in 2006, the interactive art piece has openings to enter and to exit and plenty of room in the empty interior. Children and adults seemed to be having much fun investigating the sculpture (touching permitted). I thought the scenes of the island when looking out provided good photo ops in addition to what are available from the exterior. Though the popular piece beckons immediately when leaving the ferry, those in a time crunch for catching a bus may want to wait to visit until their return. Akakabocha is one of two pumpkin sculptures by Kusama on the island. The other, Yellow Pumpkin, stands on an old wharf that extends from a sandy beach and faces the Benesse Hotel. That pumpkin is not an interactive creation.

This piece of Art is fairly close to the Ferry Pier. It's fun to pay a visit & take pictures inside and outside.

SHIMACOYA is the space that can feel true Naoshima. We make the traditional Japanese house of 120 years old a gallery, a shop, a guest house.SHIMACOYA is in Honmura district and is the location that is convenient at all because "IE project" which is a project of the contemporary art and the bus stop are near. IE project "ISHIBASHI" is near.Anyone can drop in willingly in the daytime. You take a break while taking a drink and can enjoy the shopping of the souvenir, a bookstore of a trip and the art called “SHIMACOYA BUNCO". We have an event on a holiday.Please stay in the visitor in a tent of a carry-on or the rental. "SHIMACOYA" becomes the space to have a visitor feel quiet, calm Naoshima. This is actually ranked #1 as to the sights to see on the island. This is the icon of the island, as well as the icon of artist Yayoi Kusama - created in 1994 for the island. It was the year when the artists started exhibiting their artwork on the island. You will need some space to view this, and best to go in the early morning, if you happen to stay overnight on the island. I was amazed that it was just 5-minutes walk from Benesse House where we stayed. If you would to bring the yellow pumpkin home, walk over to the gift shop of Benesse House, where I got a small miniature of the yellow pumpkin. It is my best souvenir from Naoshima.
