Things to do in Moscow, Central Russia: The Best Archaeology Tours

October 3, 2021 Enedina Augsburger

The political, scientific, historical, architectural and business center of Russia, Moscow displays the country's contrasts at their most extreme. The ancient and modern are juxtaposed side by side in this city of 10 million. Catch a metro from one of the ornate stations to see Red Square, the Kremlin, the nine domes of St. Basil's Cathedral, Lenin's Mausoleum, the KGB Museum and other symbols of Moscow's great and terrible past, then lighten up and shop Boulevard Ring or people watch in Pushkin Square.

Been living here for the past year and a half. I have ventured already twice into Siberia (Summer and Winter). I venture almost every time I get into a new neighborhood or metro station of the beautiful wonderful city. In my early days as a traveller, I though my dream was to have once the chance to live in Paris... how wrong I was. My dream became true but improved... I live in Moscow that is 1000 times better, nicer, prettier, more interesting, and way cheaper than Paris. I love it here, every day, every season. I hope I get to stay here as long as possible. This is one of the world's best kept secrets, with all the unpopular propaganda going around in the West about this great country.

Visit the legendary battlefield of the two Patriotic Wars where Napoleon's Grand Armee fought its deadliest single-day battle against the Russian Army in 1812 and where in 1941 the German troops were rushing towards Moscow. Borodino field is dotted with dozens of monuments and fortifications. There's also a small but noteworthy museum displaying artefacts and artworks related to 1812. The itinerary is totally flexible, explore everything at your own pace. I'm not a licensed guide so I'll rather be your driver and travel companion on that trip providing all the essential information and assistance. This tour can be combined with visiting the tank museum in Kubinka and the Patriot park which house an extensive collection of German and Soviet armour. My car is a Subaru Outback comfortable for 3 passengers (but can accommodate 4).

Nikolay organized an amazing three day trip for me. He was very flexible with helping me plan a trip that fit my needs and was even willing to pick me up from the airport. He was a very good driver and his car was comfortable. He knew a lot of information about all the places we visited and was a good travel companion in general for passing the long hours driving. He helped me to pick budget accommodations for our overnights. I really enjoyed my three days spent with him and learned a lot about the history of the golden ring. I enjoyed walking around the small towns and hearing stories. We visited Sergiev Posad, Pereslavl, Rostov, Yaroslavl, Suzdal and Vladimir as well as some smaller stops along the way. He was flexible with how much time we spent at each destination. Overall it was a great trip. I visited in winter but I hope to see some of the cities in summer and would definitely hope to travel with Nikolay again!
