Gulf Islands National Seashore

Enjoyed our visit to the Davis Bayou Area of the Gulf Islands National Seashore. Film at the visitors center provided good background information before we hiked some trails in the area. Was hoping to see more wildlife but not the best weather for it, though we did see several alligators in the ponds, plus many turtles and a few lizards. Also saw an osprey and some pelicans fishing from point at the old CCC camp. The CCC camp site was a highlight on its own for us, and the wide variety of flora unfamiliar to us northerners was quite interesting, too. If you like to explore the outdoors, this is a great place to visit.

I checked out the bellfontaine trail and the cl dee trails. They are both well maintained and offer a good look at different ecosystems. Pitcher plants are pretty unique. I didn’t see a single crane but the hikes were still worth it

Clark Creek Natural Area

Reviewed By mae_438 - Baton Rouge, United States

This was our fourth or fifth time hiking at Clark Creek and it won’t be the last! What a perfect way to spend Mother’s Day with my daughter and husband. An absolutely beautiful way to appreciate the beauty of nature. The smell of fresh air, the sounds of trickling water in a creek or the rushing of water from a waterfall, the sweet singing of birds in the canopies of trees or the sight of sun peeking through the leaves. I would recommend good fitting hiking shoes, comfortable fitness or hiking clothing, bug repellent, and a lot of water. If you plan on getting in or near the creek or waterfalls, you may want to wear a hiking, water shoe. The hike can take anywhere from 1.5 hours to 3, depending on how fast or slow you wish to go through the trails. There is a trail map at the head of the trail, with a few signs that point towards the waterfalls trail extensions. There is a restroom at the entrance. I also always bring a change of clothes and a towel for the ride home, just in case.

Crosby Arboretum

With increasing value being placed on our natural heritage, The Crosby Arboretum is the premier native plant conservatory in the Southeast. The Arboretum was established as a living memorial to L.O. Crosby, Jr. (1907-1978) and has expanded to become a resource for education in the region and the world.

If you are looking for a place to get "back to nature" for a few hours, check out the Crosby Arboretum. There are several paths you can hike and signs describing the various types of trees and plants that you are seeing. For $5 or less per person it is a great value. We had the pleasure of meeting Terry Johnson and his wife, Julie. Terry takes care of the entire property and his passion for his work is infectious. We took this short road trip on a day when the weather was sunny and cool. There are small areas where you can sit but you have to be physically fit to walk the trails. Not sure if bringing food for a picnic is allowed. It would probably get super hot in the summer, although there are shaded areas. It would also not be good to go if there is severe weather. There is bathroom access and a water cooler at the office. When you check in you will get a little package of turtle food, which you can use when you get to the Pavilion. The turtles in the pond will come right up for a snack.
