Things to do in Mainland, Scotland: The Best Outdoor Activities

July 18, 2021 Enedina Augsburger

The aptly named Mainland is the main island of Orkney, a collection of Scottish islands with serious Viking cred. On West Mainland you’ll find the Heart of Neolithic Orkney, prehistoric ruins that include a chambered tomb, stone ceremonial circles, and Skara Brae, a well-preserved Neolithic village. Cap off your visit with a hoppy glug from the Orkney Brewery. Over on the East side, marvel at a collapsed sea cave known as The Gloup, take a provincial stroll through St. Mary’s Village or just dip your toes in at Mill Sands or Dingieshowe Beach.

My buddy and I have just left the MV Valkyrie where we enjoyed a weeks diving on the wrecks of the WW1 German High Seas Fleet in Scapa Flow. What an AMAZING time we had. The wrecks were sublime, and even though we were only diving on 15L cylinders with air all week, we got an awesome perspective of the wrecks and don't feel that we missed out by not diving with nitrox or by having larger cylinders - indeed, the chaps with us diving twin 12s and on nitrox only racked up an extra hour of bottom time over the week. Our thanks go to Hazel, Helen, Nick, Vasco, Paddy & Jacob for their brilliant hospitality. The diving was well organised, well briefed, and the deck management was excellent. The boat was clean, the beds were comfy, and the food was great! They have also accommodated the additional requirements for Covid19 very well. Thank you for an AMAZING time.....we'll be back again soon hopefully!
