Road to the Isles

A 50-mile trail through the rugged Scottish landscape.

Reviewed By jpseddie - Poole, United Kingdom

We did the "Road to the Isles Road Trip" from Fort William all the way and enjoyed it very much. fantastic scenery with mountains rivers and waterfalls all around. Half way point make sure you stop at the Glenfinnan monument and viaduct . For Harry Potter fans the viaduct is the scene from the second movie where the Hogwarts Express caught up with the flying Ford Anglia!. The Glenfinnan Monument has a visitor centre and lots of history surrounding Bonnie Prince Charlie and the views are simply amazing especially from the top looking down on the monument. We finally arrived at Mallaig just as the Jacobite Steam Train ( Hogwarts Express) was leaving ! :o)

Tulloch Ringing Centre

Tulloch Ringing Centre is a privately owned Scottish ringing centre, which contains the most northerly ring of 12 bells. The bells are available 24/7, 365 days a year. Come for a grab, a ringing course, a peal, an outing or just to look. Lots to do for non-ringing Klingons of all ages.

Worth the climb for the superb view and be sure to also visit the lovely little station where the “Hogwart’s Express” puffs it’s way through four times a day.

Glenfinnan Viaduct

Reviewed By rafvik

We stopped at the viaduct on our way to Skye and we were certainly not disappointed! Timed to perfection we managed to be there for the passing Jacobite Steam Train and found the perfect spot to capture some amazing video footage and photo’s. Our visit was topped off with a beautiful double rainbow over the viaduct!! If you are a Harry Potter fan this is not to be missed - if you appreciate the beautiful countryside and architecture; again this is not to be missed.

Neptune's Staircase

Went for lunch at the Moorings Hotel which has been there for many years. Spacious free car park. Lovely walk along canal banks. Saw large yacht coming through one of the 8 locks. Stunning views of Ben Nevis (it was a clear, sunny day). Plenty of picnic spots. Lucky enough to see swing bridge over road open to let the yacht through on way to Loch Linnhe.

John O' Groats

The ‘commercial home’ of the Mainland Bookend it is neither the most northerly nor the furthest point from Lands’ end but will continue to be the tourist mecca and certainly meets the End to Enders requirement. The good thing is that the parking here is free and plentiful (although may get stretched in high season). It is well served with refreshments and gift/craft/tat opportunities. Unlike Lands End there is no longer a professional photographer – I was hoping to get a mirror of the one I got there last year – so go with a friend or find someone who is also seeking a souvenir photo and will do an exchange. It really should have a professional on site in my view.

Old Fort of Fort William

Reviewed By Winstoniscute - Vacaville, United States

Interesting history here, not much remains of the old fort, but interesting none the less. The great thing about this, is the monument where you start hiking The Great Glen Way is located in this park created on the historical site.
