Historic boat rides and world famous festival floats in Little Edo. Sawara, an area in Chiba, is little known, even to the Japanese. It offers beautiful townscapes of buildings of over 100 years old and the atmosphere of Japan from 200 years ago. Its local festival, the Grand Festival of Sawara, is inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Heritage List. Enjoy a quiet boat ride down Ono River that runs through the city center and stroll around the old town of Little Edo that will make you feel as if you have slipped back in time to the Edo period (1603-1868). With great access from the airport, this tour is highly recommended if you are flying into or out of Narita Airport! If you are in the area, Sawara is truly worth a visit.

While crossing the cycling road on a cross bike, we will visit the Edo period cityscape Sawara and Katori Jingu, which is famous as a power spot. The Tonegawa Cycling Road is flat, so even people without confidence in their physical strength can easily run. Lunch is Sahara or Itako. We have Japanese and Western dishes, so please choose freely. We will pick you up at your hotel in Inzai city, Narita city. You can also pick up at Narita Airport Terminal 1.2. Please let us know your arrival flight in advance. Since it is a private tour with a minimum of 2 people and a maximum of 4 people, we will flexibly guide you according to the weather and your physical strength. You can also use the Itako Cycling Road on the opposite bank of the Tone River. In that case, you will increase your mileage by 20 km and run 60 km.

If you are the type of person who prefers a local experience vs seeing a hoard of tourists, and you enjoy riding a bike, this this is your best intro to Japan, other than passing a temple with a lot of tourists on the bikes, it was “locals only” .

Rowboats, shrines, festivals and sake breweries! Sawara, a 30 minute train ride away from Narita Airport, is a city in which you can enjoy beautiful historical townscapes of the Edo Period (1603-1868). There is an Important Traditional Building Group Conservation Area in the center of town, and you can row down the river to get a great view of it. In Sawara there is also the house of the man who made the first map of Japan, a traditional festival recognised by UNESCO and the head shrine of several hundred Katori Shrines in Japan. As there is a lot to cover on this tour, you will use bicycles as a means of transportation. If you are flying into or out from Narita Airport, we recommend this tour!

If you have half day layover at Narita Airport, historic river town, SAWARA is ideal place to visit by local train. Sawara st. is located about 45 min from Narita air port terminal 1 st, and the tour guide will meet you at Narita airport st. or JR Narita sta. Sawara flourished as an important transportation point of rivers Tone and Ono crossing in Edo era. Still now the town is well preserved retaining nostalgic atmosphere and you can travel back in time to Edo era. The district has been added to Japan Heritage site, and listed in Michelin Green Guide since more and more travelers visit here from overseas.
