Lake Eyasi is a mildly alkaline lake stretching for about 50 km (31 miles) to the southwest. To the northeast, as far as your eyes can see, the horizon is dominated by the impressive Crater Highlands, to the north the plains of the Serengeti. This area is inhabited by small groups of bushmen – the Hadza and Watindiga. who live in groups hunting with bow and arrows and gathering roots, tubers and wild fruits much as humankind lived in the Stone Age.Over 100 years ago, when the stronger Masai tribes moved into the Ngorongoro and Serengeti, the tribes made the area around Lake Eyasi their home. Another interesting tribe in the area is the Datoga. These are the last remaining tribes of bushmen in East Africa. This tour gives you the chance to interact with the hadza community for hunting and cultural exchange. These are hunters and gatherers for honey and insect in the bush. Lake Eyasi is a seasonal shallow endorheic salt lake on the floor of the Great Rift Valley at the base of the Serengeti Plateau, just south of the Serengeti National Park and immediately southwest of the Ngorongoro Crater in the Crater Highlands of Tanzania. The lake is elongated, orientated southwest to northeast, and lies in the Eyasi-Wembere branch of the Great Rift Valley. During the dry season the lake may dry up almost entirely, especially in drier years, so that Datooga herders and Hadza foragers will cross the lake on foot, but in El Niño years it may flood its banks and attract hippopotamus from the Serengeti. It is a seasonal stop for migrating flamingos.

The Hadza bushmen are the last remaining group of san/bushmen (nomadic hunter-gatherer people) in Tanzania. All other such groups are in southern Africa. The Hadza probably only number around 1300 people, but only 300 or so people still follow a traditional hunter-gatherer lifestyle. They speak in the distinctive click-based language which they share with their distant southern cousins. But they are considered to be completely isolated and not genetically connected to any other group. A small minoroity still keep to their original ways and you can join them as they go hunting or forage for plants to eat. Yes this intersection between tourism and a way of life is not completely natural. But it does allow them to earn some money to supplement their traditional way of life in the 21st century.
