Vieques National Wildlife Refuge and all visitor facilities is closed due to impacts from Hurricane Irma. Refuge closures include all hiking trails, boat ramps, fishing access, and other recreational use on refuge lands. The closure remains in effect until the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service assesses storm damage and has determined it is safe for visitor access.

My idea of a trip to vieques was to rent a Jeep and explore the whole island, and explore we did! La plata was the first beach we visited in Vieques. What a place! After picking up sandwiches at La viequense we drove directly to la plata, which is located at marker 28 and 29. This beach is secluded, remote, beautiful, pristine, unspoiled, clean! There are no services, no restrooms, no food, no rentals of any kind. Here you will have a chance to experience Nature and solitude. Very few people came after we arrived early in the morning. Bring your own chairs and umbrella and enjoy! My kids, who were looking for “water activities” and found none, liked it. We swam over to La platita which is right next. Prepare to build your own rock formation at la platita and leave it there as a reminder. We stay there for about 2 hrs before driving “next door” to playa la chiva. When in vieques, visit la plata! You will not regret it, unless you are looking for jet ski rentals and “banana” rides. You will not find these here, and that was perfectly OK!!!!

I am still laughing at my "revelation" I had in the water telling my wife after I notice the curvature of the shoreline at MLB and finally realizing that Media Lunch means Half Moon :) for a non Spanish speaker it's somewhat difficult to remember but almost every island we visited in Caribbean has a beach called Half Moon and that somewhat sticks with me easier (even though English isn't my 1st language either) Nevertheless, it's the HALF MOON shape of this beach that creates perfect conditions for very calm, shallow and peaceful waters. Super pretty and relaxing. Not too much shade so make sure to bring an umbrella with you and beach chairs as this is more of a "wild" beach as compared to say Caracas Beach (another beauty). No food vendors, bathrooms etc. here either so plan accordingly. To arrive at Media Luna you actually need to enter the main gate right past Esperanza welcome sign going east; pay $4 per car and drive through the green park (where lots of horses roam around, super pretty drive) and then go through the sandy road on Sun Bay Beach to arrive at the dirt road intersection - the left turn first and then right turn (on google maps it shows right turn first to Playa Media Luna but that is not correct, the Media Luna Beach is the one you want to go for per maps info). TIP: regular car is fine just slow down, even on the Sun Bay Beach sandy road there are a lot of deeper holes so you don't want to damage the car - no SUV or 4x4 needed, you will be perfectly fine

I have a 2, 10 and 12 year old and this is their favorite beach of all time. The 12 year old likes jumping off the lava cliffs to the west while the younger two like playing in the sand on the beach and exploring the sea caves to the east. This beach has something for everyone. Each time we visited we were the only ones on the beach which makes for a pretty awesome time!

This long Beach is perfect for just about any purpose. Families spending the day having a BBQ, groups of friends dancing to their music, couples chilling, or solos taking a stroll. And, bring your dog.

My wife and I tried to check out as many of the beaches as we could during our week on Vieques. Caracas is the first one off the road on the eastern portion of the national wildlife refuge. Most of those beaches require longer rides on terribly rutted roads and have no facilities of any kind, often with very limited parking to boot. Caracas is more accessible, requiring less time being jostled in your jeep or cart. There is adequate parking, some covered pavilions, and a composting toilet outhouse. At the same time it is a wide, attractive beach with beautiful water for swimming, including for families with young children or seniors. For these reasons my wife and I ended up returning to this beach several times during our trip.

If you've survived the hassle of just getting to Vieques, you can't miss the chance to visit Secret Beach. Don't forget your sunblock and bug spray. It may not seem super buggy, but these little gnats are there. Just trust me. As for the beach, white sand and the coolest blue water you've ever seen! Almost no surf and the water is warm! One of the best things? We visited this beach twice while we were there and each time we could count on one hand the number of other people who were there. It is very secluded and feels like your own private beach!!
