I've had a priveleged opportunity to experience ecolodges around the world - from the Peruvian Amazon to the African Serengeti. The Grand Amazon Lodge and Tours was most definitely a highlight for me. From the moment my beau and I checked in to the time we left in somewhat of a distressed rush due to the impending Coronavirus quarantine, we were treated with a welcoming friendliness that made us feel we were part of an extended family. Our experience was so much more however, as I was assigned a private guide who showed me nature by way of the river and an amazing land trail that ended in a majestic ficus tree that - at least to me - symbolized the rainforest experience. The food was exquisite and featured tantalizing local Peruvian dishes as well as international fare that was flavorful and artfully presented. Facilities are relatively new - about a year old with large rooms and plenty of storage, comfortable beds, private shower and a porch hammock. All rooms have river views. Be prepared to wake up to nature as our alarm clock was the melodious serenades of jungle birds, the shrieks of howler monkeys, and the nearby gentle splashing of the capybara feeding in the water. No modern-day alarm clock needed. And then there is the free WiFi. We found this absolutely essential when confronted with the emergency quarantine of Peru and our connectivity allowed us to make last minute changes to our flights so we could be airborne before the midnight border lockdown. Yes, it's nice to go off the grid but in times of emergency, it will limit your ability to respond quickly. Plus, as a working journalist, it's necessary that I am able to file assignments on a timely basis. My beau and I will be back as this was such a unique lodge with a setting that was nothing short of paradise. Everything was simply over-the-top, from the service, staff and accommodations to the cuisine, nature and exquisite location in paradise.

This trip was easily my best experience during our visit to the Peruvian Amazon. The location of the eco-lodges is absolutely stunning, being both completely surrounded by rainforest and waterways. There is even a small and isolated village nearby where you can acquaint yourself with some of the locals. If you decide to visit the village, I recommend you try some of the locally made liquors and that you stock up for the duration of your stay. Our guide, who went by Edwin, was a wonderful person to experience the trip with. He made sure that we were well taken care of and his knowledge of the jungle and its inhabitants was extensive, to put it lightly. The rest of the staff we got acquainted with were all super friendly and always made us feel welcome. Every excursion was a trip to remember. At no point were any of us bored with the itinerary we were provided with. I do however have to point out that the included activities are not for the faint of heart, as we were constantly exposed to dangerous flora and fauna. To us however, this was what made our trips into the jungle so authentic and profound. The eco-lodges are simple, but provide you with electricity, cold showers (which is all you'll want due to the extreme heat) and shelter from mosquitoes. There is a large main hall where people get their water from, as well as where large groups gather to eat, socialize and generally have a good time. However, there is no wifi anywhere. So if that matters to you, now you know. The food was delicious. They even provided my brother with vegetarian dishes to accommodate his diet. Also, if you go fishing for piranhas they'll cook one that you've caught for you to try. Summarized; For anyone looking to experience the Amazon Rainforest at its most authentic, this is the way to do it. Though you'll have to decide for yourself if you or anyone coming with you can cope with the dangers inherent to such an expedition.
