Morne Rouge

Beautiful half-mile crescent with calm water that makes for excellent swimming.

Reviewed By kalis43 - Annapolis, United States

Known locally as BBC Beach, this is a great spot to stretch out and relax. Lounge chairs in sun or shade were available for rent for about five bucks. The water was very calm and clear for swimming but not good for snorkeling. Restrooms and a local bar right there, near Sur La Mar hotel. Natives selling clothes and jewelry but they don’t intrude. Only problem: a booze cruise boat came and unloaded a crowd, but they only stayed for about an hour. Windstar was docked in the harbor at Saint Georges so we had to take a $25 taxi ride to and from the beach, which is the same price to go to any of the other beaches. I understand that some of the cruise ships dock in a different area near the water taxi which is much less expensive. We stopped to see Grand Anse and didn’t like it, no charm, just big. It’s all in what you’re looking for. If what you want is a quiet relaxing beautiful beach with more locals than tourists,,?you’re at the right spot.

Levera Beach

An important waterfowl habitat and sea turtle nesting site near Bathways beach.

Levera Beach is roughly a 15-20 minute walk of 5 minute drive north of Bathway Beach. While Bathway Beach seems to be more popular, Levera Beach is prettier and a lot less busy. The afternoon I visited, there were just half a dozen kids splashing in the surf. The rest of the beach was essentially empty, except for the guard who watches sleepily from his small hut on the beach. Unlike Bathway Beach, there are no vendors at Levera Beach, so you'll need to bring your own food and drinks. A short distance off shore are Sugar Loaf island, Green island, and Sandy island. They make a beautiful backdrop and seem to provide some shelter from the powerful Atlantic surf. I didn't go in when I was there, but the water did look calm enough to swim there.
