Corfu Museum of Asian Art

At the top end of the 'Spaniada', Corfu Town's central park area, stands the Palace of St Michael and St George. This is the most significant building from the period of English rule and was originally built as the luxury residence of the then British Lord High Commissioner. It's now home to the Corfu Museum of Asian Art - the only one of its kind in Greece, dedicated to the arts of Asia.

What a gem ! Anyone visiting Corfu is well advised to add display this to their itinerary. It truly was an astonishing experience. It highlights the lifetime collection of a Corfiot diplomat called Gregórius Mános. He spent a lifetime collecting art pieces from assorted asian cultures and returned with it to Corfu. The government has set it up on display in a magnificent building that housed successive councils/governments - it was one of the highlights of our entire trip and is a ‘must visit’ if you get to Corfu.

Parthenon

The majestic ruins of an ancient Greek building, known for its dignified white marble columns and perfect sense of proportion.

We visited Acropolis today. It is amazing to see Parthenon with its rectangular structure consisting of 17 columns in length by 8 columns in width- a huge structure dedicated to mythological goddess Athena. It takes you back 2500 years and makes you wonder about the life of folks then and the events that unfolded later on! Do not miss out the story of the Flag - when the nazis came in 1941, a young Greek soldier refused to change the Greek flag, instead wrapped it around himself and leapt to his death. He is remembered and honored even today. There is so much to see in Acropolis- be sure you have at least 2.5 hours! I also loved the story regarding the competition between Athena and Poseidon, and how she won!!

Church of Panagia Acheiropoietos

Panagia Achiropiitos (or Agia Paraskevi) is a very beautiful, ancient church that dates back to the 5th century A.D. It is full of wonderful mosaics with golden background between the columns and the interior with its three aisles is very impressive with their perfect proportions. Be careful to check the opening hours as they are unstable. I was there in a Sunday morning's Mass and it was stunningly beautiful. It brings you back to another era. Definitely worth seeing while you are in Thessaloniki.
