Things to do in Graz, Styria: The Best Outdoor Activities

March 10, 2022 Marianna Hollaway

A bevy of universities give Austria's second-largest city its lively pace. Baroque palaces are a pleasant contrast with 16th-century courtyards and provocative modern buildings. The Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, teems with fine architecture, including the Burg castle complex, with its Gothic double staircase, and the graceful Uhrturm clock tower. A funicular takes visitors up the dramatic bluff. The River Mur dashes through the city, and thermal springs dot the surrounding countryside.

A 20-minute train ride out of Graz and a 10 to 15 minute walk along a pleasant country road, it's quite accessible on foot. The ticket office attendant spoke English & offered a phone downloadable guide in English, make sure you arrive about 10 minutes before the tour is about to start to get organised, and they allow you to pay in cash or credit card. I arrived for the 2pm tour, although I believe they had tours at 11am, 12pm, 1pm, 2pm & 3pm daily. The ticket seller spoke English, the tour guide did not but the English translation of all the viewing points within the cave was fine. They didn't encourage photos but you could sneak in a few if you stuck to the back and didn't use flash. It wasn't the most spectacular cave I've seen, although there is a popular area at the end to see, and the underground river is quite nice. It's quite cool inside, probably about 10 degrees, so come prepared with a warm jumper.
