Where to Eat in Graz: The Best Restaurants and Bars

February 24, 2018 Fernanda Pittenger

A bevy of universities give Austria's second-largest city its lively pace. Baroque palaces are a pleasant contrast with 16th-century courtyards and provocative modern buildings. The Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, teems with fine architecture, including the Burg castle complex, with its Gothic double staircase, and the graceful Uhrturm clock tower. A funicular takes visitors up the dramatic bluff. The River Mur dashes through the city, and thermal springs dot the surrounding countryside.

Frankowitsch is a quaint gourmet Sandwich shop offering its take on the Sandwich. The day I visited, I tried the lachs and tuna sandwiches. They were superb. The prices are reasonable, the service is professional, and the atmosphere is just right for the midday getaway.

Der Steirer Graz

Hans Weitzer (centre) was very busy running his wine bar back in 1910, the bar where DER STEIRER is located today. But he knew how to enjoy himself too, and took great delight in spending time in the company of his guests, sitting down together to share in delicious food and drink. DER STEIRER follows in his footsteps: gemütlichkeit is our watchword. Our aim is to make you feel completely at home, savouring the taste of traditional Styrian (or “steirisch”, as the locals say) cuisine and our almost limitless selection of wine. Relax in a laid-back atmosphere, grab a quick coffee at the bar or find a souvenir of that uniquely Styrian joie de vivre.

Restaurant SCHLOSSBERG

Had a wonderful window seat overlooking Graz on a beautiful sunny day. Went for lunch with a friend and took advantage of the delcious three course menu. I had a fish stew, pike over polenta and sauteed veggies, and a wonderful chocolate dessert. All of it was delcious. There was a a wedding party using the upper deck and we were worried we'd never get any service since it was a big function. However, the staff inside the restaurant were friendly and provided great service.

A culinary experience. Food was amazing, service was good.
We found the place through Tripadvisor, it was ranking high so we gave it a try. The place itself is very central, the interior is quite modern and stylish, we had dinner outside in the Terrace.
We were four in our party and all of them really loved everything that was served. In between we had some snacks on the house which were just heavenly (some mini-hotdogs). Three of us ordered a combination of meats and they were really really good. Even thought they do not position themselves as the meat place, it absolutely beats El Gaucho, which I had tried the day before.
It was a bit pricy and we were told people combine early dinner there with opera, which explains why they couldn't give us a reservation earlier and yet when we were there it was rather empty.

Booked here for 4 on MotoGP weekend. They clearly had more tables than they could wait/cater for. 10 minute wait before our orders were taken and after a 35/40 minute wait for Deserts we gave up and tried to leave. Astonished that the Deserts ordered but never delivered were on the bill!

I personally like this restrau.
Specifically coz its vegetarian(or Vegan may be).
Salad spread is great.
Always 2-3 veggie curries (Indian style) and most of the time 1-2 curries are good.
Eggless (or vegan) cakes are the choice for me.
I think for a decent food one needs some salad, some 1-2 good curry , rice, drinks, cakes and most of them one will get it here.
Here you pay by the weight and its self service restrau.
What i dont like - salad is bit expensive & difficulty of parking :(
Happy Eating !!!

This is actually a very good restaurant with great local cuisine that would deserve the full 5 points. I wish I understood why management tortures its guests (average age +50 years) with disco music that is so loud that it cannot be called "background music" anymore. If they had asked (or understood) their guests, they would know that +80% of them do not want any background music over lunch/dinner, but only to enjoy food and to have a nice discussion with the other guests on their table. Noise pollution can easily be prevented, and the management just needs to follow the general and obvious trend in customers' requirments towards a quiet restaurant ambience.
