Fort de la Grande Haye

Near the Canal des Vosges, the Fort of the Great Hague is one of the 17 fortifications of the fortified town of Épinal, built between 1882 and 1884. It was part of the defense line erected by General Séré de Rivières. spreading from Dunkirk to Nice to protect the border, after the war of 1870. This fort, built with its stone construction, is one of the few works of this period to have been modernized with concrete without being battleship. What an experience. Since childhood in the 50's I have been fascinated by this history and to see it in real life is astounding. It's a huge place where hundreds of soldiers lived but completely underground like moles. The machinery of the pop-up turret works and look sin good condition - eerie as gears grind and clangs echo. Well worth a day trip.
