Things to do in Finnmark, Northern Norway: The Best Bus Tours

December 3, 2021 Janean Rudisill

Lying at the very top of Europe, Finnmark is the northernmost part of Norway that reaches around Sweden and meets Finland. This is the heart of Norwegian Lapland, where Karasjok is the cultural and political seat of Sami life. Though Norway's biggest county by size, Finnmark has the fewest people. Alta, the biggest city with just 17,000, is called the Town of Northern Lights for its great views of the phenomenon. Alta Museum is largely devoted to local rock carvings from thousands of years ago.

We offer a tour for a small group to enjoy togetherness and exciment while hunting for Northern Lights in the beautiful landscapes of the Alta Fjord. We arrange organized guided tours since 2007 and have the knowledge about how to find the Northern Lights if the conditions are there. On our tours you normally will have 80-90 % chance of seeing this spectacular view. You will be offered a reindeer skin to lay on and while enjoying the great outdoors and waiting for the green lady on the sky we will share with you local stories about Norwegian way of living and the local history from the Stone Age, Sami culture, reindeer-herding, wildlife, Second World War and the modern society in Alta and Finnmark. During the tour we serve a taste of warm and cold snacks and beverages (alternative to vegans, etc.). We are normally back in Alta Center just over midnight.

Inclusions: We will offer warm beverages and light snacks during the tour, Camera Instructions, the best pictures sent by mail, local history, warm suits and boots, head torch

We had a great time on our 5 hour snowmobile tour with Stig. Preparing for the trip ahead of time we had easy and reactive communications, making sure we knew where to be and were well prepared. We opted to book individual snowmobiles instead of sharing so we could both drive on our own. We were lucky to be the only two on the trip for this tour. Stig had prepared the snowmobiles when we arrived and after changing to warm suits and boots we had a short introduction on how to safely operate the snowmobiles. Then we were off to Finnmarksvidda. Stig led the way checking on our progress and stopping at points of interest to tell us about the history of the region, Sami culture, and a bit about local Norwegian life. The ride was a bit bumpy at the beginning but then we were sailing across frozen lakes. We stopped for hot drinks and a snack at a mountain cabin (Jotka) that also hosted dog sledding tours. The dogs in the back barking excitedly for visitors. After our break we continued on to the edge of a vast lake in the middle of Finmarksvidda. The only clue of the lake being there was the flat white plain ahead of us and a motorboat incongruously sitting in the snow. Then it was time for the ride back. We had a great tour, 5 hours was just enough time as we were getting back towards sunset. The tour was well managed and Stig was an excellent guide.

We boarded the beautiful Lusso bus on a cold and overcast night. Per greeted us in his Sami costume. He said things did not look good. He showed us sky cams from all over the area and also the Aurora forecast. He volunteered to go, but told us we had a very slim chance of seeing any lights. We agreed that cancelling was the best choice. They have a few 4 minute films about the lights and Sami reindeer hearding, which he showed us on the bus. He answered questions and gave us a sample of reindeer jerky and then a small package of jerky to take home. Luuso is Per's family name and the reindeer film was shot by his uncle. After a very enjoyable 45 minutes on the bus in the parking lot, we got off and took a photo with Per. I really want to thank him for not subjecting us to hours of fruitless driving. Per made no money last night as there was no charge, but he demonstrated how an honest company should act.

This was a literal Northern Lights "Chase" with local guide, Jørn! 3 couples were picked up in a minivan by Jørn right at the cruise ship dock. First things first, he helped us get our cameras set up. And then the chase began! Because Jørn knew the area and was determined to show us the Northern Lights, we did see spectacular displays. We also saw some stunning areas around Alta, including beautiful fjords and glaciers. Before returning us to our cruise ship, Jørn took us to the town square to see an ice carving display. This is an adventure we will never forget! Because we did this excursion with Garcia Lodge, we saw the Northern Lights. As opposed to other passengers who booked with the cruise line excursion and saw nothing. Garcia Lodge was very kind to us and easy to work with. We highly recommend!
