I usually take the train from Florida to Virginia but have never taken the auto train. What an enjoyable trip. 900 miles without putting any mileage on the speedometer. The dinner meal was awesome. The service attendants were fantastic. And the car attendee in the sleeper section was the best!! Duane was his name and he was just terrific. Would do anything for you. Even get you a cup of coffee. But the best part of the trip is that I have a vehicle. If you’ve never taken the auto train do it. It is definitely a different experience. All good.

The Wiehle Reston station is the current end of the Silver LIne Metro. There is a large bus terminal on the north side of the station, where you can connect to most anywhere in Fairfax County, including most importantly, Dulles Airport (via the Washington Flyer's direct service for $5 or the Fairfax Connector/WMATA bus 505 or 981/983 for a couple bucks less).

I love the Autotrain -- just home today from Florida. How nice to be able to ride, read, play with the iPad and not drive! We had a "Family Room" -- just enough space for me, my wife, and my two kids, though my tall nine year old found her bed a little cramped. The crew is exceedingly polite and professional. Sitting in the dining car and sipping your tea while watching the trees go by is a level of elegance from another era. The food was pretty good, too, considering the circumstances. I slept pretty well, though the train does sway a lot on the upper levels. We paid an extra $60 for "priority unloading" of our vehicle when we arrived in Virginia, and we had it within 20 minutes of the time we left the train. Without this, I think we might have waited another hour. Now I'm looking for another place to go on the train.
