The Speakeasy Cocktail Bar

Welcome to The SpeakEasy Cocktail Lounge. An independent oasis in the desert of bad cocktails, where we strive to create the perfect drink for you. We have put together a menu of forgotten classics and other more contemporary concoctions to suit most tastes, using what we believe to be the best ingredients for the job. Banished are pre-mixes, purees and bad 80’s drinks.

The Cavern

A a cafe in the day-time, it's been a regular, favourite hub for the bookclub meet-ups I attend with colleagues. There are some smaller tables for 2-3 people, larger tables for small groups and a couple of larger tables that can comfortably seat groups of 8 or so people - perfect for our meet-ups. I've enjoyed a number of lunch meet-ups with my other half - there's a variety of meal choices, from lighter options like toasties (lots of vegan-friendly fillings on offer here) to meals (veggie/vegan breakfast, jackfruit burger, jacket spud, veggie/vegan 'fish' & chips. The tea / filter coffee deal with one free re-fill when purchasing hot food is a nice extra. The food is reasonably priced and very tasty. It was here that I tried vegan 'scrambled egg' (scrambled tofu) for the first time and was impressed with how well it had been cooked & prepared. From my experience, the firm favourite tends to be the smokey jackfruit burger - with the portion of fries and salad to accompany it, you'd be hard-pressed to find anything that filling for the same price elsewhere. Delicious & filling! As you may expect from a cafe that's also a music venue, there is music playing during the day and at just the right volume - where it's noticeable enough to enhance the vibe but not so loud it dominates the room & overpowers conversation. The staff tend to pick playlists of music to cover many styles and moods, so it's very rare I'll ever hear the same songs on repeat when I go there. Not really a negative as such, more of something to be aware of and prepare for - being a below-ground venue it can get a little nippy on colder, draughtier days, so it's a good idea to accommodate for this to avoid getting caught out. It's by no means freezing, but I got caught out one one visit wearing a couple of thin layers when a jumper or jacket would have taken the edge off. By night, this place is a great little independent music venue. It's become a notorious stomping ground over the years and since moving to Exeter I've seen some up-start UK & European bands on nationwide tours here, as well as some more established bands playing to an intimate, packed-out crowd. You can't replicate that atmosphere in the bigger venues - it's very special. One thing definitely worth note. I'm very glad to see this venue return after it was forced to close for renovation when a fire broke out in 2016. People have returned here to support this great (and very important!) little venue, in turn keeping the various underground/independent music scenes alive here in Exeter.
