The French Museum

A great museum and learning experience. The museum is small, but very interesting and didactic. From outside a small place but inside is a huge exhibition. This museum is located in two stately buildings, the Doctor's House and the French Hospital as they are called, built by the French fishermen around 1900. In the museum, the interesting history and legacy of the French sailors in Iceland is shown by means of the latest multimedia technology. We were impressed with the quality of the exhibits and interactive elements in a small town, and surprised by the history. This museum is really interesting.

Audun's Mineral collection

Beautiful stone museum in middle of Djúpavogur. The owner has been collecting stones around Djúpivogur for 30 years and in 2009 he opened his museum. The stones are cut in half by circular saw and polished so you can see the beauty in them. Crystals, agate, quartz and zeolite are what can be seen at the Museum, the biggest stone weighs 460kg and is the largest one of its kind ever found in Iceland.

In an around a house just off the highway in Stoovarfjorour, Iceland is Petra’s Stone and Mineral Collection. Admission to the property is about $10 US. But, if you like rocks and minerals, you’ll be in rock heavan. Petra, who passed now, was an avid collector of rocks and minerals, thousands of which are on display all around a manicured garden property. There are restrooms, a small cafe, and inside the house a myriad of stuffed animals, birds, and sea creatures. Plan to spend at least 30 minutes looking at all her collections.
