Things to do in Dublin, Province of Leinster: The Best Bars & Clubs

March 22, 2022 Madelene Haan

You've probably heard that Guinness tastes better in Dublin (fresh from the factory), but what you may not know is that Dublin is a perfect destination for the whole family. No, we're not suggesting you let the kiddies drink a pint. Instead, take them to the Dublin Zoo, to feed the ducks in Stephen's Green or on a picnic in Phoenix Park. Scholars enjoy walking in the literary footsteps of such writers as Yeats and Joyce, while discerning shoppers have their pick of designer boutiques.

O'Donoghues Bar

O'Donoghue's is a historically significant drinking establishment. Built in 1789 as a grocery store, it began operating full time as a bar in 1934. The famous Irish folk group The Dubliners started here in the early 1960s and to this day there is live traditional Irish music 7 nights a week.

O’Donoghue’s Pub was a historically significant drinking establishment located at 15 Merrion Row, Dublin 2, near St Stephen’s Green. Built in 1789 as a grocery store, it began operating full-time as a pub when purchased by the O’Donoghue family in 1934. This pub was closely associated with Irish traditional music and was where the popular Irish folk group, The Dubliners, began performing in the early 1960s. Today there was live Irish music being played while we sat and had a drink in an indoor area between the bar and the covered laneway. It was a memorable time late in the afternoon, and we even joined in the singing!

The Sugar Club

The Top 10 Things to do in Dublin in 36 Hours - New York Times "It's a venue to die for. Wood panelled walls, plush banquette seating and a pristine sound system render the rest of Dublin's night-life cruddy in comparison." The Irish Times After opening in 1963 The Irish Film Theatre closed its doors in 1985. It would be another 14 years before the space would be used again and so it was in August 1999 that The Sugar Club was born. We are an integral part of Dublin’s Cultural Community as a multi purpose Arts Centre. Irreplaceable Burmese Teak panels cover the walls of the auditorium. The tiered cinema seating was kept but replaced with plush velvet banquettes. A state of the art digital projector and high-end sound system were installed to give the best possible viewing and listening experience for performer and public alike. Dublin may be a relatively small city (and an even smaller capital) but it is literally overflowing with creative talents from so many fields. It has been our absolute delight to find and work with these individuals whether they are in Music, Film, Design, Comedy, Theatre and Animation. Many acts and artists that could go nowhere else have found their home here and gone on to become extremely successful. If you are in a band, have a movie, want to be a comedian, designer or just want to be somebody we will try and give you a stage and our time. Please get in touch with us for more information

The Sugar club is quite possibly the most intimate live venue in Dublin (that I have been to at least). The low stage means you will be standing face to face with your favorite artists. I went to see Shabazz palaces this year, and will never forget getting a high five from Ishamael Butler in the flow of a tune. And the Sugar club also has a really diverse roster of gigs. From hip hop, to the likes of the Rocky horror dress up nights if you want a "different night", then go here. If you are a visitor coming to Ireland, and you want to ditch the "paddy" pubs, come here for some real Youth culture! Another thing I like, is hard to put into words. But "unpretentious" comes to mind. While you will see plenty of hipsters, you will have a good mix of regular punters too and everyone always gets along great. I have been prompted to write this review to pay on some good Karma. I was due to attend the Rocky horror picture show, but unfortunately due to sickness we could not go. Fearing we would let the tickets, and the 50 euro I spent for them go to waste, I called the box office in a last ditch effort. "Yeah, no worries, I'll refund them now and should sell them on at the door". Within 10 minutes, I got my refund confirmed in a mail, how sound! We were actually shocked at how easy they made this for us. TL;DR; If you want a good night, real Irish youth culture, and something "a bit different", skip the chaos of Temple bar and come here. Anyway thanks

The Palace

We went to The Palace to see a favourite musician as part of Tradfest 2020. We nearly walked past as it was so small and if not for Tradfest we would have probably not noticed the bar. The bar was so full of character and history, staff were friendly and welcoming. The back room where the musician was performing was amazing. The high glass ceiling was fabulous and the pictures all around the walls were fascinating. We had a great afternoon of brilliant music in such fantastic surroundings - it couldn’t get much better!! We will definitely be returning to The Palace next time we are in Dublin ( even if our favourite musician is not there) as it is such a great little place - thank you all.

Stag's Head Dublin

You truly capture a sense of the hidden Ireland when you accidentally stumble upon The Stag’s Head. This is probably Dublin’s best preserved Victorian pub - and everything here is of authentic Victorian origin. Take time to look around and savour the sumptuously carved Victorian mahogany fittings, the mosaic marble tiled floors and granite tabletops. Visiting the Stag’s Head is a wondrous experience wether you call when the premises is cosy, warm and glowing at night time, or in early morning when this is old repository of liquid culture is radiantly illuminated by wafts of sunlight filtering through the stained glass windows. The mahogany bar, capped with red Connemara marble, follows the classic Victorian architectural pattern, being long and punctuated by exquisite partitions that divide into private compartments or stalls.

They have two options here on Tuesdays, a Ukulele session on the top floor and a comedy session in the basement. I had never heard of these but had my first date with my partner at the Ukulele session and it was so much fun. People just arrive with their own ukuleles and play modern songs! It's a great atmosphere and very relaxed. I have been a few times now and introduced friends to it too. They also have a free comedy session running at the same time in the basement (The Comedy Crunch) which accepts donations after the show and they provide a free ice-cream (milky moo) too. I've only been to this twice but it's also good for a date or with friends, depends on the comedians but I found them hilarious. If you want something different in the heart of town during the week this is a great place to go. You can also just have a drink on the main floor in a typical Irish pub ;)
